VDL Hydrogen Systems and Battolyser Systems are merging to introduce the first fully flexible, large-scale industrial electrolyzer to the market. The combined company will develop and produce a state-of-the-art system capable of efficiently generating green hydrogen from renewable electricity, providing a crucial tool for integrating intermittent solar and wind power into the energy system.
Battolyser Systems is a Dutch scaleup developing the battolyser, a system comprising an electrolyzer — a device splitting water to produce hydrogen — and a battery. It focuses on developing a fully flexible, pressurized alkaline electrolyzer that produces green hydrogen at the lowest cost by capitalizing on fluctuations in electricity prices. VDL Hydrogen System is a subsidiary of the manufacturing company VDL, specializing in high-capacity alkaline electrolyzers that efficiently produce hydrogen from renewable sources.
VDL Group will serve as the production partner, leveraging its manufacturing capabilities to bring the jointly developed electrolyzer to market. The goal of this partnership is to deliver a fully flexible electrolyzer to the market with a capacity of up to 15 megawatts, capable of producing approximately 300 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. For comparison, with 1 kilogram of hydrogen, 20 kilograms of CO2-free steel can be made.
Complementary technologies
The president and CEO of VDL Group, Willem van der Leegte, commented: "The combination of the competencies of both companies will further strengthen the impact and competitiveness of the technology. This will enable us to produce state-of-the-art electrolyzers in the Netherlands, allowing customers to produce competitive green hydrogen on a large scale. This is essential to make the transition to a sustainable energy supply successful."
Mattijs Slee, CEO of Battolyser Systems: "Our technologies complement each other, and together we can develop a better product that we can deliver on an industrial scale to our customers with VDL Groep as the production partner."
This electrolyzer can be easily switched on and off, which offers a significant advantage for integrating renewable energy sources, such as wind power, into the future energy system. Battolyser's technology stabilizes the grid by storing electricity during low demand and producing hydrogen during high demand, enabling 'cherry-picking' of lower electricity prices for cost-effective green hydrogen production.
Dutch hydrogen economy
The Netherlands is strategically positioned to develop a robust hydrogen economy, thanks to its offshore wind potential, existing infrastructure, and industrial hydrogen consumers. This partnership is expected to play a vital role in developing a Dutch value chain, accelerating the national energy transition, and facilitating the export of these advanced products to other countries.
