TU Delft Hydro Motion unveils liquid hydrogen-powered boat
Student team TU Delft Hydro Motion revealed this year's design for a boat running on liquid hydrogen.

Hydro Motion, one of the student teams from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), unveiled the design for a new, hydrogen-powered boat. The team, consisting of 25 students, hosted its design reveal on December 18, showing the public its sustainable boat concept.
Every year, a new group of students joins the Hydro Motion Team and develops a new hydrogen-powered boat in an effort to showcase alternatives to decarbonizing maritime transportation. This year, the team has taken on the significant challenge of designing a ship powered by liquid hydrogen, one of the cleanest fuel sources available.
Hydro Motion's concept
In developing their hydrogen-powered boat, the team tackled key challenges such as safely storing and using liquid hydrogen, as well as optimizing the boat’s performance for longer voyages. They designed a propulsion system powered by hydrogen, which operates efficiently without producing any harmful emissions. By successfully integrating cutting-edge systems to manage hydrogen’s unique properties, they demonstrated the potential of this clean energy source to revolutionize maritime transportation.
Through their innovative approach, the Hydro Motion Team is developing a groundbreaking vessel and leading the conversation around sustainability in maritime technology. Their work underscores student engineers' role in tackling global challenges and sets an inspiring example for the future of green marine innovation. They aim to shape a cleaner, more sustainable future for the maritime industry by showcasing liquid hydrogen as a viable fuel source.
