As editor-in-chief, Aafke oversees all content and events but loves writing herself. She makes complex topics accessible and tells the stories behind technology.

If there is one thing that I miss from the Frisian village where I grew up, it is that in Amsterdam, nobody knows their neighbor.

Until Euro 2024 came around. My upstairs neighbor hung the street with flags; the whole neighborhood helped. Packed like sardines in a can, we watched 'our boys' play in the local pub. Everyone wore orange and warmly greeted each other as bus drivers do.

Startups, technologies and performing under pressure

There's a report on Mauro's visit to some of the TU Delft's sports labs, startups that turn the world of sports upside down, and a historical overview of how technology developed at the Olympics.

Elcke interviewed Maurits Overmans, co-founder of Aristotle Technologies. This Eindhoven-based startup’s software helps people perform well under pressure. In this edition's column, she wonders if technology can help make that darn marathon a little easier. You'll spontaneously feel like going for a run and drinking healthy smoothies.

And those flags in my neighborhood? They're still there. Euro 24 may be over, but the Olympics are just about to start. According to the mathematical model my colleague Alma writes about, it could still be a very successful sports summer. Although that sense of community that sport entails is the biggest gain, if you ask me.

Enjoy this sport-packed summer, and have fun reading our newest IO Next edition!
