Planetpod, the first Dutch manufacturer of smart home batteries, is delivering the first 300 units to consumers. Their invention allows households to store their own solar energy and use it smartly. Thanks to the AI algorithm, the battery charges cheaply, and electricity can be sold at favorable times. What started three years ago as a dream of brothers Roel (30) and Maurice (27) van der Ende has now become a reality.
Control over your own energy
In a time of increasing uncertainty, consumers are looking for ways to become more independent. "When we started Planetpod, we had ideas about the market, but it was only during conversations with customers that we saw what really drives people: they are tired of being dependent on rules and prices that are constantly changing. People want to decide for themselves what happens to their energy and not be at the mercy of the government or energy suppliers," says co-founder Maurice.
Solution for the abolition of the net metering scheme
The abolition of the net metering scheme for solar energy has put solar panel owners in a difficult situation. “Soon, you will no longer get anything back for the solar energy you don't use yourself,” explains Maurice. “A home battery solves that problem: it stores what you don't use during the day and makes it available or saleable later.”
Made in the Netherlands
Planetpod is a Dutch home battery manufacturer. “We didn't want a product that comes from the other side of the world with software you have no control over. That's why we developed the most important components ourselves, from the Battery Management System to the app. This way, we not only guarantee a Dutch product, but also high safety through cybersecurity and a built-in fire extinguishing system in an all-in-one design,” says Roel.
Extra smart thanks to its own AI model
Planetpod's secret lies in the continuous optimization of energy consumption, prices, and charging capacity. The algorithm learns from each household's energy consumption, allowing the device to pay for itself relatively quickly – within six to seven years. This is achieved by cleverly responding to negative energy prices, a phenomenon specific to the Netherlands, where consumers earn money by purchasing energy. As with electric cars, the battery receives automatic software updates to ensure it always functions optimally.
1 million households with a home battery by 2035
The startup recently raised €650,000 from investors to enable production and initial deliveries. This marks the start of their ambition to help one million households store their sustainable energy.
