Starting Tuesday, May 27, something important for everyone with a Facebook or Instagram account will change. Meta, the parent company of both platforms, will begin using public posts and photos in Europe to train a new AI. You can object by filling out special forms.
Meta is working on its own AI chatbot: Meta AI
Meta is currently developing a new artificial intelligence called Meta AI. It is a chatbot that can answer questions, generate text, and even create images based on descriptions. Think of help with writing an email, planning an outing, or creating an illustration. In essence, it is a competitor to ChatGPT or Google Gemini, but powered by your social media data.
What exactly does Meta use?
Information that you've shared publicly, such as your name, profile photo, and posts in public Facebook groups or on a public Instagram profile. Messages in private groups or on private profiles are not included. According to Meta, this is necessary to help their AI better understand European languages and cultures.
Held back by European regulators
Meta wanted to start this plan earlier, but had to put the brakes on last year due to concerns from European regulators. They felt that users were not given enough time to object. Meta is now trying again, and although the Dutch Data Protection Authority is still considering the legality, no bans have been imposed.
Want to object? You must do so before May 27
If you do not want your public content to be used for this AI, you can object – but you must do so before May 27. You can do this by filling in special forms.
