The Brabant Development Agency (BOM) cites the launch of an AI Supercomputing initiative in collaboration with the Province of North Brabant and universities as one of the highlights of the now-completed 2021-2024 strategy period. This will make large-scale computing power for AI and Big Data more democratically accessible. BOM also played a role in 16 national growth projects focused on sustainability and innovation, and developed a VC Readiness Program for startups. In addition, BOM manages new funds, such as the €100 million SecFund, focused on technological innovation for defense. Internationally, BOM scored with a Dutch Pavilion at Semicon SEA 2024 in Malaysia.
On the horizon: a new strategy for 2025-2028, aimed at strengthening strategic autonomy after global shocks such as the coronavirus crisis.
AI Supercomputing: democratizing computing power
In the report, BOM states that it has reached a significant milestone with the introduction of the AI Supercomputing initiative. Together with the Province of North Brabant, Eindhoven University of Technology, and Tilburg University, this project is transforming the utilization of computing power in the region. Previously, such capacities were beyond the reach of smaller companies and institutions, but now they are more accessible than ever. Thanks to this collaboration, companies in Brabant can benefit from large-scale computing and AI technology in a way that contributes to both innovation and competitiveness.
National Growth Projects
BOM's involvement in sixteen projects supported by the National Growth Fund emphasizes its central role in sustainable development and innovation. These projects range from solar energy and medical technology to process technology and labor productivity in the manufacturing industry. Such involvement illustrates BOM's strategic efforts to contribute to technological progress in the Netherlands. This is further supported by the VC Readiness Program, which prepares young startups for crucial investment rounds.
SecFund: innovation for defense
In collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, BOM has established SecFund, a national early-stage fund with a target capital of €100 million focused on technological innovation for defense purposes. This fund aims to stimulate innovation in security and technology, which draws parallels with international defense trends where technology forms the cornerstone of strategy. In conjunction with initiatives such as Brainport Innovation & Technology Security (BITS), this fund aims to transform the Netherlands' technological landscape in defense.
International success at Semicon SEA 2024
The very first European Dutch Pavilion at Semicon SEA 2024 in Malaysia marked an important victory for BOM on the international market. This strategic presence demonstrated the strength of Dutch high-tech innovations and helped promote cooperation with Southeast Asian markets. This step towards internationalization not only supports regional industry but also strengthens the broader global economic networks in which the Netherlands can play a crucial role.
Geopolitical pressure
With a new strategy for 2025-2028, BOM aims to build on past successes and learn lessons from global events such as the coronavirus crisis and geopolitical tensions. The emphasis on strategic autonomy and chain control is becoming increasingly important. By focusing on transition themes such as energy and health, Brabant will strengthen its role as an innovation hub. This will not only help companies survive in uncertain times but also flourish in a rapidly changing global landscape.
