This week's grand kick-off event marked the start of MICS: the Mechatronics Innovation Campus Schiedam. Mayor Harald Bergmann of Schiedam opened the event, after which a robot performed the official opening act for this area development, focusing on companies in the mechatronics sector. In his speech, the mayor emphasized the value of this location: “space for growth, presence of talent and excellent accessibility.” With MICS, Schiedam gets a boost for innovative and sustainable entrepreneurship, technology, employment, and talent development.

Located just north of Schiedam train station, the 42-hectare MICS site is part of the SchieDistrict area development. The innovation campus that developer SDK Vastgoed (part of VolkerWessels) is realizing here is intended to become the hotspot for the mechatronics sector, the part within the manufacturing industry where electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and measurement and control technology converge. The campus concept should help create a strong ecosystem of entrepreneurs, education, research, and government.

The opening took place next to Metrohm Applikon's new building, which is now under construction. This originally Swiss manufacturer of high-precision instruments for chemical analysis is a participant of MICS.

The finest technology is often hidden behind closed doors, but at MICS, the technology is made visible. According to the developers, this contributes to providing an environment where young and old talent can get the most out of themselves by encouraging collaborations, which is essential for innovation.

SDK Vastgoed is also known as the developer of Brainport Industries Campus in Eindhoven.
