Rubio Impact Ventures has raised €70 million for its third impact investing fund, bringing its total assets under management to €220 million. The new fund will invest in 30 ambitious impact companies tackling the climate crisis and social inequality, with a focus on innovative solutions in renewable energy, sustainable food, and mental healthcare access.
Rubio Impact Ventures is a venture capital (VC) firm headquartered in Amsterdam. It pledges to stand out as a mission-driven VC, backing entrepreneurs dedicated to systemic change. They co-create impact targets with the companies they invest in, ensuring a clear path toward achieving significant social and environmental benefits. Since 2015, Rubio has invested in over 40 rapidly growing impact companies, including Sympower, which balances the electricity grid using renewable energy; NoPalm Ingredients, focused on sustainable alternatives to palm oil; and OpenUp, which provides access to mental healthcare.
Trust in impact investing
Rubio's latest fund, Fund III, attracted a diverse group of investors, including successful Dutch entrepreneurs, family offices, and returning investors from Funds 1 and 2. Key partners include the European Investment Fund (EIF), Invest-NL, Oost NL, the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), ING Social Impact Investments, and the NN Social Innovation Fund. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) also provided an innovation loan under the Seed Capital scheme.
Machtelt Groothuis, co-founder of Rubio, sees the entry of new parties such as ING and the NN Social Innovation Fund as a sign that investing in impact will become a mature market. Groothuis: “Impact investing has proven itself. And that is important because the need is greater than ever. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing social inequality require entrepreneurs who build high-impact solutions. Our goal is not only to provide financial support to these entrepreneurs, but to help them realize their mission.”
As Rinke Zonneveld, CEO of Invest-NL, describes it: “For me, investing in Rubio Fund III is a no-brainer. Rubio is leading the pack in the Dutch impact investing scene. They didn’t just set the standard; they created it. Especially how they don’t just talk climate but tackle social issues head-on is inspiring others and convincing institutional investors to enter this space.”
