Revyve, a Dutch food tech scale-up, has raised €24 million in a Series B funding round. With this investment, the company aims to scale up the production of functional yeast proteins that can replace eggs and additives in mainstream food categories. The unique properties of these yeast proteins offer food producers an affordable and sustainable solution to meet their sustainability goals and offset fluctuations in egg prices.
Financing round and investors
The Series B financing round was jointly led by the ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund and Invest-NL, with regional support from the Brabant Development Agency (BOM). This capital injection brings the total capital raised by Revyve to more than €40 million. The involvement of various investors underscores the confidence in the potential of Revyve's technology and the growing demand for sustainable alternatives in the food industry. Hanna Zwietering, Senior Investment Manager at ABN AMRO SIF, emphasizes that Revyve addresses an important need in the food transition by offering scalable ingredients with a low ecological footprint and attractive economic benefits for food producers.
Production facility and capacity expansion
Revyve opened a production facility in Dinteloord, the Netherlands, in 2024, which is already operating at full capacity for various customers. With the new investment, Revyve will expand its production capacity to more than 1,600 tons per year. This expansion is crucial to meet the growing global demand and ensure a reliable supply to customers in Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The facility in Dinteloord is a so-called ‘first-of-a-kind’ production facility, meaning it is one of the first of its kind to produce yeast proteins for food applications on this scale. The choice of Dinteloord as a location underscores the importance of the Dutch agri-food sector and the availability of expertise and infrastructure for innovative food technologies.
Applications and benefits of yeast proteins
Revyve's yeast proteins can replace eggs in various applications, such as cakes, brownies, and glazes on sweet products. Yeast proteins offer several advantages over traditional eggs, including a more consistent price and a more stable supply, which is important given the highly variable prices of eggs. In addition, yeast proteins are a ‘clean label’ solution, which means they are considered a natural ingredient and contain no undesirable additives.
According to Cedric Verstraeten, CEO of Revyve, Revyve's yeast proteins can offer the same or even better functionalities than eggs, such as aeration, emulsification, and gelling. With minor adjustments to the recipe, they deliver the same sensory and functional experience. This makes them attractive to food manufacturers looking for a sustainable, affordable, and functional alternative to eggs.
Sustainability and protein transition
The development of egg-replacing yeast proteins fits within the broader trend of protein transition, which seeks more sustainable and efficient ways to meet the growing demand for protein. Traditional egg production has a significant environmental impact, including through land use, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Yeast proteins, on the other hand, can be produced in a much more sustainable way, with a lower ecological footprint. Revyve uses both brewers' grains (a by-product of beer production) and primary cultured baker's yeast, contributing to a circular economy.
Future plans and market focus
Revyve is currently active in Europe and North America and is expanding into the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to yeast, Revyve is also investigating other microbial sources for future egg replacement products. This demonstrates Revyve's continued commitment to innovation and the development of sustainable solutions for the food industry. The focus on clean-label products, combined with stable prices and supply of yeast proteins, makes Revyve an attractive partner for food producers seeking to respond to changing market demands and the growing demand for sustainable and healthy food.
