Last year, only 127 megawatts of new wind turbines were added in the Netherlands — that's only about 33 turbines. This is the smallest growth since 2017, according to a report by RVO. In regions such as South Limburg, Twente, and around Amersfoort, there are still no wind turbines at all.

Many objection procedures

At present, onshore wind turbines generate a combined total of almost 7,000 megawatts. In addition, there are plans for projects generating around 1,300 megawatts. However, growth falters in the long term. The new report makes it clear that many wind projects are getting bogged down in objection procedures. They regularly end up before the Council of State, where long waiting times cause delays.

Resistance from residents

At the same time, resistance among residents appears to be growing. This is making local politicians more cautious. With municipal elections on the horizon, controversial decisions are often postponed, the report warns.

Defense plays a role

The Ministry of Defense also plays a role: it needs more training grounds, which limits the space available for wind turbines near military zones.

The RVO is currently working on a separate report on offshore wind energy.
