QuantWare, a global leader in the production of commercially sold quantum chips, has raised €20 million in a Series A financing round. The funding round is led by public investors Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund and Innovation Quarter, underscoring the national importance of this technology.

Quantum computers promise to perform certain computations exponentially faster than traditional supercomputers. This makes it possible to tackle complex problems in areas such as healthcare, energy management, or cybersecurity that are currently unsolvable.

VIO technology: more than a million quantum bits on a chip

QuantWare is developing VIO, a unique technology that can increase the number of quantum bits on a chip to more than 1 million. This opens the door to larger quantum computers with much more computing power. With this, QuantWare will realize the size of quantum processors earlier than competitors such as Google or IBM, which are also developing quantum chips. The Delft-based company is already the largest supplier of quantum chips worldwide.

QuantWare's groundbreaking VIO technology solves a critical bottleneck in quantum computing. The computational power of quantum computers increases exponentially with the number of qubits. The computational power of today's quantum computers is limited by their relatively modest number of qubits, ranging from hundreds to at most a few thousand. VIO opens the door to more than a million qubits on a single chip, a breakthrough that will make application of the technology exponentially more powerful.

“Our mission is to make VIO the global standard. That we can occupy such a unique position in the value chain is due to the exceptional talent concentrated in the Netherlands,” said Matthijs Rijlaarsdam, ceo and co-founder of QuantWare. “This investment round shows that with sufficient access to capital, the Netherlands can produce global leaders in high-growth tech sectors.”

The importance of quantum for the Netherlands

Due to the great promises of quantum technology, a global race is underway between countries to develop the most powerful quantum computer. The Netherlands has a unique position in this technology; we are one of the world's leaders in quantum.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has identified quantum technology as one of ten key technologies in the National Technology Strategy. These technologies are crucial to the Netherlands' future economic sovereignty, earning power and national security. QuantWare has been named one of the Tech Champions - the ten leading companies representing the Netherlands in these strategic sectors.

That this €20 million funding round is led by public investors Invest-NL Deep Tech Fonds and Innovation Quarter underscores the national strategic importance of this investment. QuantWare currently serves customers in 20 countries and is the largest commercially sold quantum chips supplier. The funding will accelerate further development of the VIO technology and roll it out to its customers. QuantWare will also expand its chip manufacturing facilities to meet growing demand from its global customer base.
