Philips has sold a business unit that develops chips for the semiconductor and medical sectors to a group of Dutch investors. This group includes former VDL Nedcar director John van Soerland and entrepreneur Cees Meeuwis. The company will continue independently under the name Xiver.

Xiver develops microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for use in sensors for airbags, infrared detectors, catheters, and other medical diagnostic devices. The company also supplies chip machine manufacturer ASML. The new management says it is the only independent manufacturer of MEMS chips in Europe that is not Chinese-owned.

Heavy losses

Under Philips, the chip factory suffered heavy losses. The new team is determined to make the company profitable within a year. Van Soerland expects Xiver to benefit from no longer being part of the large healthcare technology company Philips.

Trade union positive

Xiver has reached agreements with the unions about the terms of employment for staff. Trade union FNV reacted positively to the agreement.
