Investment company DGFO and Eneco have jointly submitted a proposal to the European Commission. This means that the Netherlands is officially participating in the selection process for one of the five AI Gigafactories of the new EU program InvestAI, which is expected to generate up to €20 billion in investments in European AI infrastructure.

Europe digitally independent

The AI Gigafactories, previously announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are intended to help reduce digital dependence on the United States and China. The goal is to create a powerful European network of sovereign computing power for AI applications in healthcare, science, education, defense, and the economy.

‘The Netherlands has everything it needs’

“Just as trains cannot run without rails, AI cannot exist without robust AI computing infrastructure,” says initiator Han de Groot. “The Netherlands has everything it needs to win this European tender: a strong digital infrastructure, direct access to renewable energy, a high-quality knowledge infrastructure, and a strong technology ecosystem.”

Peter Wennink expresses support

The Dutch submission is supported by a broad coalition of leading Dutch companies, knowledge institutions, and public organizations. Prominent executives, such as former ASML CEO Peter Wennink, have also expressed their support.

Other countries

Other countries are also working on their candidacies. Germany, France, Austria, Spain, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Sweden, among others, have expressed their interest in an AI Gigafactory to the European Commission.
