European science ministers recently met in Warsaw. They are calling for an ambitious funding program for research and innovation. This is seen as an essential condition for a competitive, technologically independent and safe Europe.
All 27 member states have endorsed the Warsaw Declaration proposed by the Polish presidency. This declaration calls for independent funding of scientific research and innovation. According to the declaration, a generous budget is necessary to ensure that research and innovation contribute to the EU's competitiveness.
The current Horizon Europe program for research and innovation has a budget of €95 billion for the period 2021-2027, making it the largest scientific funding program in the world. Later this year, the European Commission will present proposals for the funding of research and innovation after 2027. This topic will play a central role in the political negotiations about the EU's next multi-year financial framework.
