In the first six months of 2025, a record amount of $386 billion (€332 billion) flowed into renewable energy worldwide. That is 10% more than in the same period last year. Within the EU, investments increased by 63%, while in the United States they actually declined by 36%. This is according to the latest figures from BloombergNEF.

Globally, investments in clean energy are doing well. The growth is mainly due to investments in small-scale solar energy projects. These can be realized quickly and therefore generate returns relatively quickly. Investments in this type of project doubled, particularly in China.

Investments in offshore wind also increased significantly: in the first half of this year, more than €33 billion was invested in this sector, compared to just over €26 billion in the whole of 2024.

Globally, less money was invested in onshore wind projects. Investments in large-scale solar energy installations also fell by 19%.

Shift from the US to Europe

There are clear differences in investment between the economic superpowers. In the US, investment fell in the first half of 2025, partly due to President Trump's policy of blocking various renewable energy projects. At the same time, investment in the EU actually increased. Developers are shifting their focus from the US coast to the North Sea, particularly in offshore wind.

China remains the country with the highest level of investment in renewable energy: approximately 44% of all investments in the first half of 2025 took place on Chinese soil.
