Hydrogen production must become faster, cheaper, and safer. The Groningen-Eindhoven start-up Avoxt offers a solution with innovative and revolutionary electrolyzer technology. This innovation allows hydrogen to be produced more efficiently, safely, and affordably than ever, a crucial step in the global energy transition. Some time ago, Avoxt started at HighTechXL, the venture builder in Eindhoven that focuses on beginning companies that want to develop socially relevant innovations and bring them to the market.

Avoxt is working on a new type of electrolyzer. This electrolyzer does not contain membranes. The advantage of a membrane-less electrolyzer is that it can significantly reduce hydrogen production costs. Avoxt is Future Tech Ventures' latest investment in Groningen. This new investment fund is a product of the investment vehicles of UMCG (Triade), RUG (RUG Ventures), Investeringsfonds Groningen, and NOM. Brabant Startup Fonds BV is also investing in further developing and upscaling this technology. No amounts have been disclosed.

'Power transmission rates must come down if we want to be hydrogen country'

VoltH2, like other hydrogen producers in the Netherlands, faces a number of challenges, including high tariffs for electricity transmission.

Alexander Draaijer, investment manager at NOM: “Avoxt is working on a technology that could mean a breakthrough in hydrogen electrolysis. NOM supports their process of substantiating their proof of concepts to convince more investors to get on board.”

Kyra Weaver, investment manager at FTV, says that Avoxt holds the key to radically improving hydrogen production. “The disruptive potential of this technology is attracting attention. However, this deep tech requires significant investment to reach the commercial phase. Our mission is clear: we support Avoxt in becoming ‘investor ready’ for the next investment round. The mix of youthful enthusiasm and experienced entrepreneurship in this team is a great basis for an energetic collaboration!”

Gerard Spanbroek, managing director of BSF, thinks Avoxt is interesting for the Brabant Startup Fund because it meets the SDGs and the technology promises to accelerate the energy transition. “That's good for the people of Brabant, the Dutch, and the world's citizens.”

Ton Rademaker, co-founder and CEO of Avoxt, sees an important market for electrolyzers that keep production costs low. “We need to produce green hydrogen. And that is where Avoxt wants to play an important role.”
