AIKON Health, an Eindhoven-based medtech startup, has successfully raised €1.2 million in seed funding, aimed at transforming the management of heart failure care. Their innovative wearable technology monitors key parameters such as hemodynamic function and fluid status, to reduce hospital readmissions by at least 25%.

As a progressive and chronic condition, the rising prevalence of heart failure can be attributed to several factors, including an increase in incidence, an aging population, improved survival rates from other cardiovascular diseases, and a history of other chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying causes and managing associated symptoms. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, and fluid retention, necessitating careful management and lifestyle adjustments. Through its wearable patch, AIKON Health provides non-invasive, continuous monitoring of patients, enabling healthcare professionals to make informed, proactive decisions and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

The startup is a spin-off from TNO, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, founded in 2023. These sensors represent the culmination of a decade's worth of research at TNO, leveraging hybrid printed electronics and biocompatible materials to create devices that conform to any body shape, ensuring both comfort and precise monitoring.

Funding for growth

The investment round, led by the TTTMedtech fund with contributions from BOM, BSF, Rabo Innovation Loan, and TNO Ventures, will accelerate the development of AIKON's innovative wearable technology. By pursuing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and compliance with the European Union Medical Device Regulation EU MDR, AIKON Health plans to integrate this solution into clinical workflows across Europe and the United States.

Looking forward, AIKON Health is eager to collaborate with healthcare professionals and institutions to conduct pilot programs that will refine its innovative solutions. By partnering with hospitals and clinics, the company envisions integrating its technology into diverse healthcare settings, thereby accelerating the shift toward proactive, data-driven patient management. The ultimate goal is to empower healthcare providers with real-time patient data, reducing hospital readmissions and improving patient quality of life through personalized, remote monitoring.
