GIGA Storage, a developer of battery storage projects in the Netherlands and Belgium, announces that it has secured financing for the construction of a 300 MW and 1,200 MWh (1.2 GWh) battery energy system.

GIGA Leopard is a large-scale project in Delfzijl, in the province of Groningen, and is expected to be operational in the second half of 2027. The storage capacity is sufficient to supply all Dutch households with sustainable energy for more than half an hour. The financing of approximately €300 million has been secured through a consortium of eight European lenders.

Strategic location: offshore wind energy

The project is strategically located near an important hub for offshore wind energy generation. The battery will be connected to TenneT's high-voltage grid via an existing transformer station. GIGA Storage developed both the project and the financing structure with a view to a flexible commercial strategy, involving collaboration with utility companies and energy traders for the purchase and optimization of energy storage.

‘Operational in 2027’

"We are determined to have Leopard operational on schedule in 2027. In doing so, we are building on our experience and innovative approach to realizing large-scale battery storage. The construction on the site of the former Aldel aluminum factory marks a new chapter for this location, respecting its industrial past and looking toward a sustainable future," said Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage.
