{"id":442655,"date":"2023-04-07T12:17:09","date_gmt":"2023-04-07T10:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/?post_type=selected&amp;p=442655"},"modified":"2023-04-07T12:17:09","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T10:17:09","slug":"lithium-sulfur-batteries-energy","status":"publish","type":"selected","link":"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/selected\/lithium-sulfur-batteries-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries: neutrons unveil sluggish charge transport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Solid-state Lithium-Sulfur batteries offer the potential for much higher energy densities and increased safety, compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the performance of solid-state batteries is currently lacking, with slow charging and discharging being one of the primary causes. Now, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/aenm.202203426\">study<\/a> from Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) shows that sluggish lithium ion transport within a composite cathode is the cause of this slow charging and discharging, the researchers say in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helmholtz-berlin.de\/pubbin\/news_seite?nid=24752&amp;sprache=en&amp;seitenid=1\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientists designed a special cell in order to observe the transport of lithium-ions between the anode and the cathode in a solid-state Lithium-Sulfur battery. Since lithium can hardly be detected with x-ray methods, HZB physicists Dr. Robert Bradbury and Dr. Ingo Manke examined the sample cell with neutrons, which are extremely sensitive to lithium.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link advgb-dyn-84538edf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/selected\/oxygen-ion-batteries-invention\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"After Lithium-ion: the oxygen-ion battery\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">After Lithium-ion: the oxygen-ion battery<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous today &#8211; from electric cars to smartphones. But that does not mean that they are the best solution for all application areas.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lithium ions observed directly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We now have &nbsp;much better idea what is limiting the battery performance,&#8221; says Bradbury: &#8220;We see from the operando neutron radiography data that there is a reaction front of lithium ions propagating through the composite cathode confirming the negative influence of&nbsp;a low effective ionic conductivity.&#8221; Additionally, the 3D neutron tomography images show trapped lithium concentrated near the current collector during recharging. &#8220;This results in a diminished capacity because only some of the lithium is transported back when the battery is charged&#8221; Bradbury continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The observed lithium distribution was an excellent fit to a model based on the theory of porous electrodes: &#8220;What we observe here in the neutron imaging data correlates well with the relevant electronic and ionic conductivity conditions from the model&#8221; says Bradbury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottleneck identified<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These results unveil a previously overlooked development bottleneck for solid-state batteries, showing that limitations exist in the cathode composites due to the slow ionic transport. The challenge now is to enable faster ion delivery within the cathode composite. &#8220;Without direct visualization of the reaction front inside the cathode composite this effect might have gone unnoticed, despite its importance for solid-state battery development,&#8221;
