Researchers at the Technical University of Nuremberg (FAU) are deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent chronic inflammation. This is being done as part of the EU project Imminent Disease Prediction and Prevention at the Environment Host Interface (IMMEDIATE<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental factors are a major culprit in chronic inflammation. In particular, lack of exercise, unbalanced diet and stress are risk factors. Chronic inflammation, in turn, can lead to cardiovascular disease, obesity and type-2 diabetes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individual prevention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The IMMEDIATE project is strongly committed to individual prevention. Here, it first looks at the microbiome in the intestines. This is where the regulation of inflammatory responses takes place. These can be positively influenced by a change in diet. The IMMEDIATE team investigates the inflammatory processes and tries to trace biomarkers that predict these inflammations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often a patient does not respond until he notices clinical symptoms. Then a disorder is already present in the body. Once it is clear which biomarkers lead to inflammation, the AI creates a risk profile based on them. In many cases, a change in lifestyle and dietary habits turns out to prevent inflammatory diseases. <\/p>\n\n\n

Follow-up care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This AI analysis is also usefull for effective follow-up care. Here, inflammation is often disastrous for recovery. By preventing inflammation during aftercare, the chances of a good recovery become increasingly greater. Prof. Schiffer, from the University of Nuremberg, with aftercare program NTx 360, is participating in IMMEDIATE as one of three studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“NTx 360 is an aftercare program for kidney transplanted children, adolescents and adults,” explains Schiffer. Through the AI interventions during NTx 360, we achieved great results.
