The concept version of the Lightyear 2, the successor to the first generation of solar-powered electric vehicles, was presented last week at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. The Dutch high-tech company is now opening the waiting list for its second production model. The estimated price is around 40,000 euros. “Interested parties can already sign up on the waiting list now to be first in line when the model becomes available for order,” Lightyear announced in a press release<\/a>. It does require some patience, as production will only start towards the end of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n

Lightyear, the start-up from the Dutch town of Helmond which is working on passenger cars fitted with solar panels, has raised 81 million euros to develop the first electric car ever to use solar energy as fuel. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

“The Lightyear 2 helps us in our mission to make clean mobility accessible to everyone,” said Lex Hoefsloot, CEO and co-founder of Lightyear. “This is the first electric car that allows people to prioritise sustainability without compromising practicality. Through the efficient use of sunlight, the Lightyear 2 reduces dependence on already overburdened electricity grids. Indeed, the car even provides clean energy to the grid.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compared to other electric cars, the Lightyear 2 emits up to 50 per cent less CO\u2082 and offers a range of more than 800 km.
