Volvo has become the first truck manufacturer in the world to start using fossil-free steel in its trucks. The fossil-free steel is produced by Swedish steelmaker SSAB and is made using an entirely new technology with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. “This leads to significantly lower climate impact and an important step towards an emission-free value chain,” Volvo said in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first steel produced with hydrogen will be used in the electric truck’s frame rails, the backbone of the truck on which all other main components are mounted. As the availability of fossil-free steel increases, it will also be introduced in other parts of the truck. Among the customers that will have fossil-free steel in some of their electric trucks are Amazon and DFDS.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sweden wants to be the first country in the world to bring fossil-free steel onto the market. The goal is to develop a completely fossil fuel-free chain: From the mine to the finished product.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n

Green transition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“DFDS is committed to our green transition and to delivering greener transport and logistics solutions,” said Niklas Andersson, co-director of DFDS. “Every step in the green transition of logistics brings us closer to a carbon-free society. Therefore, we are happy to hear that some of our new electric trucks to be delivered soon will also be produced with fossil-free steel.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

90 percent recyclable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, around 30% of the materials in a new Volvo truck come from recycled materials. Also, up to 90% of the truck can be recycled at the end of its life.
