In the future, artificial intelligence (AI) will be used in most cars. Although the system is very useful, it also raises a question. Who is responsible if things go wrong? This study shows more insight into public opinion about this matter. <\/p><\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n

People seem to hold the human driver to be primarily responsible when their (partially) automated vehicle crashes, according to a new study<\/a> by the TU Delft AiTech Institute. The researchers state that the driver receives most blame, even when they can’t reasonbly avoid the crash. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a paper recently published in Nature Scientific Reports<\/a>, researchers from the TU Delft AiTech Institute investigated the apparent mismatch between the public\u2019s attribution of blame and finding from the human factors literature regarding human\u2019s ability to remain vigilant in partially automated driving. Participants of the experiment blamed the driver primarily for crashes, even though they recognized the driver\u2019s decreased ability to avoid them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culpability gap <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The imbalance between human-factor-related challenges with automation regarding driver ability and the participant\u2019s responsibility attributions reveals a culpability gap. In this culpability gap, responsibility is not reasonably distributed over the involved human agents; the driver receives most blame, yet this may be unreasonable given their impacted ability to change the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings of this work have implications. In terms of public discourse, based on the participants\u2019 arguments, it seems that the majority of the participants do not consider the aforementioned human-centered challenges of automated driving in their responsibility attribution. This could indicate that humans are unaware of these effects of automation, which could lead to \u2018unwitting omissions\u2019. Drivers are unaware of the impact of automated driving on their ability to perform the required driving tasks should they need to, yet they are still considered to be responsible by their peers. The researchers think that providing public information about the driver-centered challenges associated with automated driving could be helpful, as well as driver training.<\/p>\n\n\n
