Its removal can help reduce emissions. <\/p><\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Methane is natural gas&#8217; main component, a less-impactful alternative to fossil fuels.&nbsp;This has consequences, as methane concentrations in the atmosphere have more than doubled from pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Methane is much more powerful than CO\u00a0<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0as a greenhouse gas and is the second gas that contributes the most to global warming.\u00a0To avoid the 2-degree increase in global temperature that was agreed upon in the Paris Agreement, not only CO\u00a02\u00a0emissions must be reduced, but also methane emissions writes the Barcelona Tech &#8211; UPC &#8211; in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\/es\/sala-de-prensa\/noticias\/descubren-un-catalizador-para-eliminar-las-emisiones-de-metano-un-potente-gas-de-efecto-invernadero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most effective ways to remove methane is to use a catalyst that accelerates its oxidation with air.&nbsp;For a long time, the best catalysts to eliminate methane used palladium nanoparticles supported on ceramic oxides. However, they stop working when in contact with water steam, which is always present in the combustion of natural gas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link advgb-dyn-1741a041\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/air-quality-in-european-cities-keeps-being-poor\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Air quality in European cities remains poor\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">Air quality in European cities remains poor<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">Stefan Thorliefsson was 103 years old and was featured in a piece by the Icelandic news magazine Visir while enjoying a game of golf. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is the solution?\u00a0Adding platinum atoms to the palladium nanoparticles.\u00a0This is what UPC researchers found out, together with researchers from the University of Udine (Italy) and the ALBA Synchrotron.\u00a0The work, published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Nature Communications<\/em><\/a>\u00a0, has been led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/futur.upc.edu\/NuriaJimenezDivins?locale=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">N\u00faria Jim\u00e9nez Divins<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/futur.upc.edu\/NuriaJimenezDivins?locale=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>, Marie Curie postdoctoral researcher, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/futur.upc.edu\/JordiLlorcaPique?locale=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jordi Llorca Piqu\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0, the current vice-rector for Research, both from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eq.upc.edu\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Chemical Engineering<\/a>\u00a0and the Institute of Energy Techniques of the UPC, linked to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eebe.upc.edu\/es?set_language=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE)<\/a>, at the Diagonal Campus-\u00a0Kisses.<a href=\"https:\/\/futur.upc.edu\/JordiLlorcaPique?locale=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eq.upc.edu\/es\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eebe.upc.edu\/es?set_language=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers have compared the data they obtained in experiments carried out in three different beamlines of the ALBA Synchrotron. Using synchrotron light, what they discovered is that the oxidation states of palladium and platinum play a key role in the removal of methane. Furthermore, a catalyst prepared with mechanochemical methods is more active and perfectly resistant to water.&nbsp;This catalyst \u2013which has already been patented\u2013 is today, the most effective in the world to remove methane.
