Scientists from <a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en.html\">ETH Zurich<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsl.ch\/en\/index.html\">Swiss Federal Institute&nbsp;&nbsp;for Forest, Snow and&nbsp;&nbsp;Landscape Research (WSL<\/a>) reconstructed for the first time the melting of glaciers throughout the 20th century across all of Switzerland. The researchers used historical imagery to do this. <a href=\"https:\/\/ethz.ch\/en\/news-and-events\/eth-news\/news\/2022\/08\/a-historical-perspective-on-glacial-retreat.html\">ETH Zurich stated in a press release<\/a> that they came to the conclusion that the volume of glaciers fell by half between 1931 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"juxtapose\" width=\"100%\" height=\"460\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/juxtapose\/latest\/embed\/index.html?uid=f4b7d78e-1e03-11ed-b5bb-6595d9b17862\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Photo: View of the Fiescher Glacier as seen from the M\u00e4rjelen Alps (\u00a9 swisstopo and VAW \/ ETH Zurich)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an article just published in the professional journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-cryosphere.net\/\">The Cryosphere<\/a>, a team of researchers from ETH Zurich and the WSL reconstructed the topography of all Swiss glaciers as they were in the year 1931.
