{"id":386684,"date":"2022-07-14T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/?post_type=selected&amp;p=386684"},"modified":"2022-07-14T15:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-14T13:00:00","slug":"researchers-optimise-green-methanol-production-to-reduce-transport-carbon-emissions","status":"publish","type":"selected","link":"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/selected\/researchers-optimise-green-methanol-production-to-reduce-transport-carbon-emissions\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers optimise green methanol production to reduce transport carbon emissions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For the last year, ten European and Japanese research expert organisations have been working together on the <a href=\"https:\/\/laurelin.eu\/\">LAURELIN <\/a>project to develop innovative processes to convert CO\u2082 in renewable methanol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responsible for more than 25 percent of the EU\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions, the transport sector urgently needs new decarbonised alternative renewable fuels. That is why the LAURELIN project, funded by the European Union and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jst.go.jp\/EN\/\"> Japan Science and Technology Agency<\/a> (JST), works on developing innovative solutions to improve green methanol production from CO\u2082 hydrogenation in terms of energy efficiency and production cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Impressive potential<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRenewable methanol has an impressive potential to help decarbonising the transport sector. It can cut CO\u2082 emissions by up to 95 percent, reduce NOx emissions by up to eighty percent, and completely eliminate SOx and particulate matter emissions. It is a promising technology that can play an important role in making Europe the first climate-neutral continent\u201d explained Adolfo Benedito Borr\u00e1s, LAURELIN Technical Coordinator and Head of the Materials Research Department at AIMPLAS in a <a href=\"https:\/\/laurelin.eu\/2022\/07\/14\/researchers-optimise-green-methanol-production-to-reduce-transport-carbon-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But hydrogenation of CO\u2082 into methanol has strong limitations related to the process, the energy consumption and production costs. CO\u2082 is generally unreactive and hydrogenation is impossible without the use of a catalyst, a substance added to accelerate the chemical reaction of H2 with CO\u2082. LAURELIN\u2019s team therefore is developing new catalyst systems perfectly adapted to advanced reactor technologies to reduce energy consumption of the methanol synthesis from CO\u2082, and therefore its cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three technologies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team is working on three promising technologies: microwave, non-thermal plasma induction and magnetic induction. They are finalising the construction of the three corresponding reactors for CO\u2082 conversion to methanol. The partners will continue to fine-tune these novel reactors in the coming weeks, for example by making them operable at higher pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this basis, the project will test more than hunderd samples of new catalyst materials and compare them with conventional thermal hydrogenation. This will help optimising the selectivity and yield of the methanol production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReducing the e-methanol production costs would lead to an increase in the opportunities to use it as fuel.
