The student biomedical engineering team\u00a0Arm2u\u00a0<\/a>from the\u00a0Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB)<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya \u00b7 BarcelonaTech (UPC) has developed\u00a0a transradial prosthesis. It replaces an arm missing below the elbow. It is controlled by the natural electrical signals produced by muscle contraction, so the UPC in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After creating a first prosthesis last year, the team has taken a step forward by\u00a0creating a second prototype, a fully functional robotic arm that enables hand pronosupination (forearm rotation) and opening\/closing movements.\u00a0It is based on EMG sensors, which collect the commands from the patient\u2019s muscle contraction and transforms these electrical impulses into a signal that the microcontroller can understand and use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosthesis is\u00a03D printed with PLA plastic, so it can be produced at a low cost, as explained by Llu\u00eds Bonet Ortu\u00f1o, one of the team leaders:\u00a0\u201cOne of our main goals when developing the prosthesis was to make a prototype with affordable technologies so that it could be produced and modified constantly without a high cost. Using 3D printing, we have created a prosthesis at a much lower cost than similar prostheses on the market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Prototype parts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Designed entirely by the Arm2u team,\u00a0the prototype includes four fundamental parts that work in a coordinated way\u00a0to enable mobility: the\u00a0socket, which holds firmly the device onto the limb; the\u00a0prono, which stores most of the electronics and houses the control and status information elements of the prosthesis; the\u00a0gripper, a clamp-shaped element to manipulate objects; and finally, the\u00a0electronic part, which uses an Arduino Uno microcontroller to connect the sensors, motors and other elements for controlling the device and reporting its status to the user.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second model features\u00a0several improvements, such as an integrated LCD screen, which reports continuously the status of the prosthesis providing information on battery life, the effort by fingertips, the interior temperature and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the new design has\u00a0enhanced adaptability\u00a0that allows for adjustment to the user\u2019s arm size,\u00a0and a reduced total weight compared to the previous model, which makes it more comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
