{"id":381318,"date":"2022-06-17T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/?post_type=selected&amp;p=381318"},"modified":"2022-06-17T10:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T08:00:00","slug":"researchers-find-a-method-for-extending-the-lifetime-of-organic-batteries","status":"publish","type":"selected","link":"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/selected\/researchers-find-a-method-for-extending-the-lifetime-of-organic-batteries\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers find a method for extending the lifetime of organic batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Harvard University have developed a method to dramatically extend the lifetime of organic aqueous flow batteries, improving the commercial viability of a technology that has the potential to safely and cheaply store energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar, writes the University of Cambridge in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/new-approach-topples-major-barrier-to-commercialisation-of-organic-flow-batteries?_gl=1*1bqy5kf*_ga*MzgwOTM2NC4xNjUzNDY5OTU5*_ga_P8Q1QT5W4K*MTY1NTQ1MTEzOS4zLjAuMTY1NTQ1MTEzOS4w\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process works a bit like a pacemaker, periodically providing a shock to the system that revives decomposed molecules inside the batteries. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41557-022-00967-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">results<\/a>, reported in the journal <em>Nature Chemistry<\/em>, demonstrated a net lifetime 17-times longer than previous research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOrganic aqueous redox flow batteries promise to significantly lower the costs of electricity storage from intermittent energy sources, but the instability of the organic molecules has hindered their commercialisation,\u201d said co-author Michael Aziz from Harvard. \u201cNow, we have a truly practical solution to extend the lifetime of these molecules, which is an enormous step to making these batteries competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Batteries made with natural elements <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past decade researchers have been developing organic aqueous flow batteries using molecules known as anthraquinones \u2013 composed of naturally abundant elements such as carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen \u2013 to store and release energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of their research, the team discovered that these anthraquinones decompose slowly over time, regardless of how many times the battery has been used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In previous work, the researchers found that they could extend the lifetime of one of these molecules, named DHAQ but dubbed the \u2018zombie quinone\u2019 in the lab, by exposing the molecule to air. The team found that if the molecule is exposed to air at just the right part of its charge-discharge cycle, it grabs oxygen from the air and turns back into the original anthraquinone molecule \u2014 as if returning from the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But regularly exposing a battery\u2019s electrolyte to air isn\u2019t exactly practical, as it drives the two sides of the battery out of balance \u2014 both sides of the battery can no longer be fully charged at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/batteries-all-around-lets-take-a-good-look-at-the-state-of-battery-technology\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Batteries all around: let&#039;s take a good look at the state of battery technology\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">Batteries all around: let&#8217;s take a good look at the state of battery technology<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">Do you remember? Battery technology is in flux &#8211; let&#8217;s take a better look.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An electrical method reverses the decomposing process <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To find a more practical approach, the researchers developed a better understanding of how the molecules decompose and invented an electrical method of reversing the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers from Professor Clare Grey\u2019s group in Cambridge\u2019s Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, carried out in situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) \u2013 essentially \u2018MRI for batteries\u2019 \u2013 measurements and discovered the recomposition of active materials by an electric method, the so-called deep discharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team found that if they performed a deep discharge, in which the positive and negative terminals of the battery get drained so that the voltage difference between the two becomes zero, and then flipped the polarity of battery, forcing the positive side negative and the negative side positive, it created a voltage pulse that could reset the decomposing molecules back to their original form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extreme discharge helps <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsually, in running batteries, you want to avoid draining the battery completely because it tends to degrade its components,\u201d said co-first author Yan Jing from Harvard. \u201cBut we\u2019ve found that this extreme discharge where we actually reverse the polarity can recompose these molecules \u2014 which was a surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGetting to a single-digit percentage of loss per year is really enabling for widespread commercialisation because it\u2019s not a major financial burden to top off your tanks by a few percent each year,\u201d said Aziz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research team also demonstrated that this approach works for a range of organic molecules.
