{"id":380114,"date":"2022-06-13T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/?post_type=selected&amp;p=380114"},"modified":"2022-06-13T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T10:00:00","slug":"smart-guardrail-will-warn-drivers","status":"publish","type":"selected","link":"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/selected\/smart-guardrail-will-warn-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart guardrail will warn drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Researchers from the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV), belonging to the ai2 Institute, and from the company <a href=\"https:\/\/metalesa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Metalesa <\/a>have developed a new smart road guardrail that is capable of identifying risk situations and alerting user, writes the UPV in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/noticias-upv\/noticia-13621-seguridad-vial-en.html\">press release<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, it can warn municipal authorities of accidents and events such as an impact against the guardrail or an approaching vehicle speeding, or register the passage of pedestrians on the road in question, as well as the weather conditions in the area. Designed for use on urban and interurban roads, although it can be adapted to any environment, it is the first approved guardrail on the market with built-in active safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detecting up to 10 scenarios <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To develop it, researchers at the ai2 Institute of the UPV have designed communication and control software, as well as all the electronics installed inside the guardrails, which are equipped with various sensors. They have also integrated external visibility, temperature and air quality sensors, plus a radar and a thermal camera; all these elements are used to detect risk situations, and then road users are alerted of such situations when the lighting integrated inside the parapet is switched on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Francisco Blanes, the ai2 Institute\u2019s main researcher on the project, explains, &#8220;up to 10 different scenarios and behaviours of the guardrails have been defined, so that they light up depending on each of these risk situations&#8221;. In this way, if, for example, there is a traffic jam on a stretch of road at the entrance to the city, the guardrail lights up and shows signs at the preceding stretch that warn drivers of the situation, thus facilitating mobility and traffic management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, this smart guardrail is also capable of collecting information \u2013on CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels, for example\u2013 and sending it, along with the other variables, to a cloud-hosted data collection platform.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/e-scooters-will-have-a-distinctive-universal-sound-to-alert-road-users\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"E-scooters will have a distinctive, universal sound to alert road users\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">E-scooters will have a distinctive, universal sound to alert road users<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">British experts are working to ensure that pedestrians can immediately detect when an e-scooter is approaching. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Much more than a safety barrier<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The idea was that an approved containment system that had always been passive would now incorporate smart city complements that would allow it to become an <a href=\"https:\/\/metalesa.com\/metaurban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">active road safety system<\/a>. This guardrail is much more than a safety barrier for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and personal mobility vehicles (PMVs),&#8221; explains C\u00e9sar Valero, Metalesa\u2019s Director of Digital and Technological Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guardrail has been designed for installation in urban and interurban areas, although the system is fully configurable and its electronics are flexible in terms of their management, so that the parapet can be adapted to different environments and scenarios, depending on the needs of each city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is the first of our products with PLUG&amp;META\u00ae technology, which will allow us to include digital technology in our transport infrastructures, making them smart and promoting safety, sustainable mobility, management efficiency and citizen services&#8221;, concludes Valero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project has also involved the company Dismuntel, located in the Polytechnic City of Innovation, the science park of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia.
