This Sunday, it\u2019s Lucien Engelen\u2018s turn.<\/em><span id=\"more-70909\"><\/span><span id=\"more-72500\"><\/span><span id=\"more-75016\"><\/span><span id=\"more-77498\"><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>By\u00a0Lucien Engelen<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SU-Lucien-Engelen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-69647\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SU-Lucien-Engelen.jpg\" alt=\"SU Lucien Engelen\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People like Dana Lewis and her husband Scott Leibrand <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/story\/robot-vacuum-ate-my-pancreas-diabetes\/\">hacked her insulin system<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so the pump that manages the insuline automatically, based on glucose measuring, alters the dose if needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more of these &#8216;hacks&#8217; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rendia.com\/maker-movement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the internet, mostly with the hashtag <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23wearenotwaiting&amp;src=typd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#wearenotwaiting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the website of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/openaps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Openaps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the former CTO of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/idealab\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (HHS) <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/susannahfox.com\/2014\/02\/10\/hacking-home-health-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susannah Fox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advocates: hack is meant in the original sense of the word: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catb.org\/jargon\/html\/meaning-of-hack.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;an appropriate application of ingenuity\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As healthcare institutions, professionals and innovators as well as industry, we can learn a lot from this. It gives us a lens on what people need and want and in what direction we could improve our services and products. Of course &#8216;hacking&#8217; these systems comes with hurdles and challenges and of course <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMp1511363#t=article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not without risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hear an increasing number of stories like these and am curious to find out if we can find out more about them. So my hunch was to try to collect as much of those &#8216;hacks&#8217; as possible, to see how patients, their family or others help to better manage diseases or illness by inventing additions, alterations or other use as inspiration to innovators to take on the challenge to improve health(care).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And learn from it, discuss about it, debate it actually with that more and more creating a ecosystem with a Quadruple Helix &#8211; so not the regular triple helix (Government, Industry and knowledge institutes) but WITH patient, family and informal care right from the start:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/159986243\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#patientsincluded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-21-at-10.29.52.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80893\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-21-at-10.29.52.png\" alt=\"Hack your healthcare\" width=\"667\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve created <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.pinterest.com\/lucienengelen\/hacked-your-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Pinterest board<\/a> for hacking health(care), devices, treatments and processes.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So please share this post (liking does not share to your network) to reach as many people as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.pinterest.com\/lucienengelen\/hacked-your-healthcare\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-80906\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Screen-Shot-2017-01-21-at-14.28.15.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-01-21 at 14.28.15\" width=\"1315\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share it with those you know who are living with a condition and you know of them &#8216;hacking&#8217; their health(care).
