Een jury met experts verbonden aan de Academy of Urbanism verkoos Kopenhagen boven concurrenten Eindhoven en Montpellier. De bekendmaking was gisteren in Londen.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eindhoven.nl\/actueel\/nieuws\/Bidbook-Eindhoven-voor-Europese-stad-van-het-jaar-online.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">het bidbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> voor de verkiezing benadrukte de stad de relatie tussen groene stadsontwikkeling aan het begin van de 20e eeuw en in het heden. Het zogenaamde &#8216;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garden City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;-concept stelde een groene infrastructuur en het delen van de openbare ruimte centraal om de kwaliteit van leven in de stad hoog te houden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>De jury bezocht Eindhoven afgelopen zomer en was vooral onder de indruk van de manier waarop de stad zichzelf heruitvond na de malaise van de jaren negentig.\u00a0Steven Bee, chair of the Academy: \u201cWith remarkable composure and resilience, Eindhoven faced the inevitability of major industrial closures and the loss of 35,000 jobs. Over the last 20 years it has rebuilt its economy and its urban fabric to become a world-leading centre of new technology and culture. It has forged new partnerships with other cities in the Netherlands, its European neighbours and global counterparts that enable it to look forward with confidence to sustained and sustainable growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wethouder Mary-Ann Schreurs herintroduceerde het concept &#8216;Garden City&#8217; als drager voor het Eindhovense stadsontwikkeling: &#8220;De natuurlijke groen- en waterelementen vormden ook begin jaren 20 al de dragende kracht en verbinding in de stadsontwikkeling. Nu, zo\u2019n 100 jaar later, stellen we opnieuw de Garden City centraal. Water en groen als zichtbaar antwoord in de stad op de uitdagingen van een internationale smart society. De historische componenten van Garden City geven Eindhoven de unieke basis om op natuurlijke wijze in te spelen op de klimaatverandering zoals wateroverlast en hittestress. Maar bovenal zorgt het voor een unieke, groene en fijne gedeelde openbare ruimte.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De jaarlijkse Urbanism Awards, die inmiddels tien jaar bestaan, laten zien hoe &#8216;geweldige plekken&#8217; (waaronder steden, dorpen en buurten) worden gecre\u00eberd en behouden. Rotterdam (2014) en San Sebasti\u00e1n (2015) wonnen eerder deze City of the Year Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.academyofurbanism.org.uk\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy of Urbanism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is een autonoom, politiek onafhankelijk en zelfvoorzienende organisatie die kennisdeling onder stadsmakers stimuleert.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eindhoven is niet uitgeroepen tot &#8220;Europese Stad van het Jaar&#8221;.
