In fact, this is\u00a0a full-time job for some in our team.&#8221; But not for long, as far as Maltha is concerned. CytoSMART is an Eindhoven company that is trying to make research easier, cheaper and faster for biologists.6<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The start of the company, which is located at\u00a0the TU\/e campus, was caused by a\u00a0failed stem cell research. &#8220;Simply said, a stemm cell is a cell\u00a0that hasn&#8217;t\u00a0decided yet what kind of cell it\u00a0wants to be. Thus, you can use them for many purposes. In 2012, our research failed\u00a0after\u00a0research laboratory workers forgot to\u00a0perform inspections during the weekend. The cells did\u00a0not endure without power. That would have been\u00a0different if we had\u00a0monitored the cells in real time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the car back from the lab in Denmark Maltha asked his colleagues how they would be able to monitor all the cells in real time. &#8220;Everything is possible with your cellphone these days. So why not keep track of\u00a0the growth of cells? No company made these kind of microscopes and so we went for it yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cloud<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63056\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63056\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BvOF-2013_0405_GA-rechten-CytoSMART-HR-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-63056\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BvOF-2013_0405_GA-rechten-CytoSMART-HR-.jpg\" alt=\"the CytoSMART microscope\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-63056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">the CytoSMART microscope<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first product they put on the market, was a small microscope that uses the cloud. &#8220;It includes photographs and keeps track of temperature and humidity.&#8221; This information is sent to the company&#8217;s Cloud. All pictures are shown in succession so\u00a0you can see how the cells are dividing,\u00a0moving, and whether they are still alive. &#8220;This you can watch anywhere now. This not only makes work easier, but also much more accurate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to use the CytoMate Lab Assistant\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hXohMqF_eY8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To be able to make the next steps, CytoSMART has received from\u00a0Holland Venture and the Brabant Development Agency (BOM). &#8220;That enables\u00a0us to continue to grow rapidly this year, and to produce and market three new products.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cells Counter<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63057\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BvOF-2013_0405_ER-rechten-CytoSMART-HR-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-63057\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/BvOF-2013_0405_ER-rechten-CytoSMART-HR--300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Cells Counter\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-63057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cells Counter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At present, the Dutch company is finalizing two new products. In August, they market\u00a0an automatic cell counter. &#8220;We had two people in full-time service every day for eight hours and all they did was count. That&#8217;s really drudgery. In this we are unfortunately not unique. In many laboratories manual counting is still the way to go. There are products to automatically count biological cells, but they are so inaccurate that they are rarely used, with their\u00a0margin of error of thirty percent. In addition, these products are often expensive to use.&#8221; These products are poorly developed, according to Maltha. &#8220;That&#8217;s a problem we can solve by working together with some other Eindhoven based institutions and companies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cells Scanner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second product of CytoSMART is a scanner and is for sale from\u00a0September. The company wanted to make the scanning and photographing of biological cells as easy as scanning, for example, a newspaper clipping. &#8220;As with our other products we first looked\u00a0at existing products. To operate it, the tray with the cells\u00a0had to be\u00a0moved slowly, otherwise too much of the liquid would slosh away, together with the cells. So we turned it around: we wanted\u00a0to move the scanner instead of\u00a0the tray.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/OMNI7_blauw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-63058 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/OMNI7_blauw-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"CytoSMART Omni  (scanner)\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><strong>Easier<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Similar scanners cost about one hundred thousand euros.&#8221; He picks up his phone. &#8220;For about one hundred euros you can take a picture of this room, but to picture a group of cells, it will cost a thousand times as much. That is our starting point. We want to simplify expensive, slow and large appliances, and make them smaller.
