Ocean contains 97% of the planet\u2019s water, with the remainder being freshwater found in glaciers, rivers, and lakes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> The ocean produces <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ocean-oxygen.html#:~:text=Scientists%20estimate%20that%20roughly%20half,some%20bacteria%20that%20can%20photosynthesize.\"><strong>50% of the world\u2019s oxygen<\/strong><\/a> through the photosynthesis of marine plants. Most of this production comes from oceanic plankton, such as algae, bacteria that can photosynthesize, and drifting plants. Estimates suggest that there are up to 1,200,000 gigatonnes of oxygen on planet Earth.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ocean waters play a key role in regulating the Earth\u2019s carbon cycle by capturing\u00a0 CO<sub>2<\/sub> from the atmosphere. In fact, the ocean <a href=\"https:\/\/updates.panda.org\/10-numbers-that-will-make-you-look-at-the-ocean-differently\"><strong>absorbs 30%<\/strong><\/a><strong> of carbon dioxide from human activities<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean, reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Mariana-Trench\"><strong>11,000 meters<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>depth. Located in the western Pacific Ocean, there is still life in the oceanic trench, with unique species that adapted to this environment&#8217;s high pressure and darkness.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the smallest plankton to the 30-meter-long blue whale, the ocean is the planet&#8217;s biodiversity hotspot. The five main ocean basins, the Pacific, the Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern Oceans contain <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanliteracy.unesco.org\/ocean-exploration\/\"><strong>94% of the world\u2019s wildlife<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every minute, the equivalent of <a href=\"https:\/\/updates.panda.org\/10-numbers-that-will-make-you-look-at-the-ocean-differently\"><strong>a dump truck of plastic<\/strong><\/a> flows into the ocean. As the amount of plastic waste is expected to quadruple by 2050, this waste stream is severely affecting marine ecosystems. WWF estimates that 90% of seabirds have plastics in their stomachs, and one in two marine turtles have eaten plastic.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/marine.copernicus.eu\/explainers\/why-ocean-important\/food-security#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20UN%20Food,for%20over%203%20billion%20people.\"><strong>20%<\/strong><\/a><strong> of the world\u2019s protein consumption<\/strong> comes from the ocean. Fish \u2013 did you know that around 20,000 fish species exist?\u2013 and seafood is an important source of protein for billions of people worldwide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Global trade couldn\u2019t do without the ocean: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/ocean\/topics\/ocean-shipping\/#:~:text=The%20main%20transport%20mode%20for,comes%20with%20opportunities%20and%20challenges.\"><strong>90% of the world&#8217;s goods<\/strong><\/a> are transported by ships across the ocean, whose routes facilitate cargo movement between continents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/sustdev\/natlinfo\/indicators\/methodology_sheets\/oceans_seas_coasts\/pop_coastal_areas.pdf\"><strong>40%<\/strong><\/a><strong> of the world\u2019s population<\/strong> lives within 100 kilometers of the coast. Coastal areas are densely populated and face some of the most concerning challenges of our time, such as rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and pollution.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We have only explored <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanliteracy.unesco.org\/ocean-exploration\/\"><strong>5%<\/strong><\/a><strong> of the ocean floor<\/strong>.
