From electric cars to windmills and computers to train AI models, chips are pieces fitting many puzzles, including healthcare, with semiconductors enabling disruptive developments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"io-block io-block__box\"><h2>Why this is important:<\/h2><p>The role of the semiconductor industry is as key as ever as chips become instrumental to the development of better innovations in all technology domains. <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\">imec<\/a>, the Belgian leading microelectronics research institute, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Since its inception, the institute has been positioned at the forefront of semiconductor research, expanding outside of Flanders and opening research labs in the United States, Netherlands, and Japan, to name a few. This year, imec also held its flagship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\/events\/itf-world-2024\">ITF World<\/a> (imec Technology Forum) in Antwerp, hosting two days of keynotes and breakout sessions around the industry and its research efforts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the extensive demo floor, imec scientists showcased their research projects. Here are five of the projects that caught our attention the most.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Emissions measurements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The nitrogen crisis is ever-present in the Netherlands, as agriculture needs to find ways to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Wageningen-based One Planet Research Center aligns with this mission and aims to create a more sustainable food production chain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of its research initiatives, the center is developing chip technology to measure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneplanetresearch.nl\/innovatie\/sensing-emissions\/\">methane and nitrogen emissions<\/a> resulting from agricultural activity. In doing so, scientists work alongside farmers to track emissions. One Planet\u2019s chips can spot real-time peaks in local emissions due to manure moving, for instance. As a result, scientists are helping farmers adopt better practices\u2014such as water spraying frequencies in barns. Most importantly, by amassing data and evidence on agricultural practices, this project aims to provide decision-makers with reliable tools to use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Localized electric care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Drugs don\u2019t work for everyone and can cause distress and severe side effects to those following a medication care path. Electrical stimulation of organs, including the brain, is rising as an alternative, giving patients a localized therapy alternative. Similarly, imec researchers from Eindhoven\u2019s Holst Centre are researching peripheral nerve stimulation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\/expertise\/health-technologies\/implantable-devices\/selective-peripheral-nerve-stimulation-pns\">PNS<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PNS consists of changing the electrical activity of neural fibers and sending electrical signals. This results in organ-targeted treatment that relieves patients from pain. Imec researchers design tiny implantable chips to further study PNS and potentially offer an alternative or a complement to drug care in nerve-related diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/brain-therapy-goes-electric\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Brain therapy goes electric\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">Brain therapy goes electric<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">As with any other pain or disease of the human body, drugs are the most used way to treat the brain. According to Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) data, antidepressant consumption increased by almost two and a half times from 2000 to 2020 in 18 European countries. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Car passengers\u2019 vital sign sensing\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More stringent regulations on passenger safety require automakers to include sensors to monitor passenger vital signs on board. At imec, different research projects are exploring different technological pathways to develop these sensors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to do so is by combining near-infrared lasers and speckle plethysmography (SPG). This technique analyzes the changes in speckle patterns resulting from the interaction between blood cells and lasers. Imec develops sensors to be integrated into a car\u2019s cockpit to detect passenger heart rate and respiration. Similarly, another research group is looking at the use of high-frequency radar\u2013 up to 140 GHz\u2013&nbsp; to get vital signs out of passenger\u2019s skin. Although highly precise, this technology is very expensive. Therefore, the scientists also use ultrawideband (UWB) radar, a technology already introduced in cars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Studying organs with chips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Organ-on-a-chip technology serves two purposes: studying diseases and better understanding organ functioning. This technology mimics organ and tissue activity on silicon, eliminating the need for animal testing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one of the demo floor\u2019s booths, imec scientists presented their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\/expertise\/health-technologies\/organs-chip-technology\">organ-on-a-chip technology<\/a>. One of the focuses is personalized medicine and drug discovery. Researchers showcased modeling of the blood-brain barrier, a selective membrane regulating chemical transfer from blood to the brain. Through this model, they are studying the interaction between blood, cells, and potential drugs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/tno-develops-ultrasonic-patch-for-organ-monitoring\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"TNO develops ultrasonic patch for organ monitoring\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">TNO develops ultrasonic patch for organ monitoring<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">Making an echogram, for example to properly visualize the condition of an organ such as the heart or circulation, is usually done by an expert sonographer in a hospital or diagnostic center. TNO has developed a technology in which a flexible patch on the skin uses ultrasound to take images over a longer period of time of the organ to be examined. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Retinal imaging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Portuguese writer Paulo Coelho, \u201cThe eyes are the soul\u2019s mirror.\u201d To medical researchers, the eyes are a gateway to learning more about a patient&#8217;s health condition. In fact, many health problems, including tumors, as well as vascular and sexually transmitted diseases, can be spotted by looking at the retina.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a state-of-the-art technique to scan the eye\u2019s retina using bulky and expensive devices. Imec is developing on-chip OCT, paving the way for more compact devices that can reach even general practitioners.
