The Netherlands is the second largest hydrogen producer in Europe. Almost all hydrogen now comes from fossil fuels. By 2030, the Netherlands wants to have 4GW of electrolysis capacity. A key challenge to producing green hydrogen on that large scale is investigating how much the current natural gas network on land and sea can be reused for hydrogen. Consider pipelines that can safely transport this energy carrier above and below ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It must be discovered where new facilities are needed and what needs to be regulated for the new energy system to operate safely and cost-effectively with public support. This requires more research into hydrogen production, transportation, and storage along the entire hydrogen value chain. The HyTROS project will conduct applied research into this. HyTROS is part of GroenvermogenNL, a National Growth Fund program driving the scale-up of green hydrogen use in the Netherlands. HyTROS has received a grant of \u20ac 14 million plus over \u20ac 4 million in contributions from the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n
The HyTROS project (Hydrogen Transport, Offshore, and Storage) will investigate transport (particularly via pipelines), above- and underground storage, offshore transport and storage, and safety. The consortium consists of 32 parties from research and industry. HyTROS’ research will run until early 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
HyTROS is GroenvermogenNL’s first R&D hydrogen project. It is part of GroenvermogenNL’s larger R&D program, which deploys \u20ac177 million for industrial, applied, and fundamental research until 2030. With seven research themes, this program focuses on strengthening the entire value chain of the green hydrogen industry, from import and production to transport and industrial use.<\/p>\n\n\n
