In 2022, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20231030-1\">9.8 million people<\/a> employed in high-technology sectors across the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\">EU<\/a>, corresponding to 4.9% of the EU\u2019s total employment. The gender representation in this sector sees men accounting for just over two-thirds (67.2%) of the total.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"io-block io-block__summary\"><ul><li>In 2022, hightech sectors in the EU employed 9.8 million people;<\/li><li>Making up 4.9% of total employment, with men constituting 67.2% of this workforce.<\/li><li>The French and Spanish capital regions (Ile-de-France and Comunidad de Madrid) had the highest number of high-tech sector employees;<\/li><li>Across the EU, women represented 32.8% of the total workforce in these sectors.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highest and lowest numbers of people employed in hightech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the regional level (NUTS 2 regions), the French (Ile-de-France) and Spanish (Comunidad de Madrid) capital regions registered the highest number of people employed in <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20231030-1\">high-technology sectors, 420\u00a0000<\/a> and 289\u00a0000, respectively. They were followed by 3 regions, which recorded more than 200\u00a0000 persons employed in high-technology sectors: Oberbayern in southern Germany, Lombardia in northern Italy and Catalu\u00f1a in eastern Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the bottom end of the distribution, there were 5 regions with less than 3\u00a0000 persons employed in high-technology sectors: the southern Italian region of Molise, together with four Greek regions \u2013 Anatoliki Makedonia, Thraki, Peloponnisos, Ipeiros, and Sterea Ell\u00e1da.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women in high tech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Women accounted for almost one-third (<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/ddn-20231030-1\">32.8%<\/a>) of the total number of people employed in the EU\u2019s high-technology sectors in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The share of women in high-technology employment across NUTS 2 regions, ranged from a high of 50.2% in the Hungarian region of Nyugat-Dun\u00e1nt\u00fal down to 8.3% in the Greek region of Thessalia. In fact, Nyugat-Dun\u00e1nt\u00fal was the only region in the EU (at this level of detail) where there were more women than men employed in high-technology sectors.
