That\u2019s the fundamental question the whole Eindhoven University of Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tue.nl\/en\/\">TU\/e<\/a>) academic year opening ceremony revolved around.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"io-block io-block__summary\"><ul><li>Eindhoven University of Technology officially started the academic year. <\/li><li>The ceremony hosted keynotes and panels about creating future earning power. <\/li><li>The university&#8217;s role to accommodate the transition and serve society will be crucial. <\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the other universities in the country, the TU\/e celebrated today the start of the new academic year, putting its role in creating knowledge and innovation at the center of the discussion. The university\u2019s heads and several guests took on the stage of the university\u2019s <em>Blauwe Zaal <\/em>(Blue Room) to discuss the topic in keynotes and panel sessions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What speed for the transition? &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a brief welcome by the TU\/e\u2019s board chairman Robert-Jan Smits, the first guest to give a speech was Diederik Samsom, chief of cabinet of the departing European commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/en\/frans-timmermans-cajole-form-coalitions-or-else-go-through-the-back-door\/\">Frans Timmermans<\/a>. In his address, he mentioned Smits\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraaf.nl\/financieel\/700594922\/bestuursvoorzitter-tu-eindhoven-robert-jan-smits-energietransitie-gaat-te-snel\">interview<\/a> with De Telegraaf \u2013 one of the main Dutch newspapers \u2013 where the chairman stated that the energy transition should slow down. \u201cWith the energy transition, we don\u2019t have the choice of going slow, the essential imperative in climate change is running fast. The United States and China are accelerating, and we should speed up, too,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later during the event, Smits replied to Samson, highlighting the importance of taking on the transition while pointing out the challenges represented by grid congestion and labor shortage. Most importantly, the politician stressed the social aspect of the transition, urging the young engineers to team up with humanists to figure out the impact of the technology they design on society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link advgb-dyn-9126d369\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/ai-powers-the-energy-transition\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"AI powers the energy transition\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">AI powers the energy transition<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">Businesses are harnessing AI to significantly enhance their energy efficiency and sustainability objectives.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Costs and collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaking the transition happen is less expensive than not taking any action against the climate crisis,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ing.nl\/particulier\/\">ING<\/a>\u2019s global head of research Marieke Blom. Her brief keynote focused on the economic feasibility of the transition, underlining the Dutch economy\u2019s readiness to shift, although stressing the importance of public investment in accommodating such a shift.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asml.com\/en\/\">ASML<\/a>\u2019s CEO Peter Wennink highlighted the existence of further challenges than the climate one \u2013 namely, an aging population and the digital divide. On the contrary, it started with &#8220;poverty and negligence&#8221;, back in 1984. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Chair of the Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides the panel and the speeches, students also had their space. A group of members of the GO Green Office handed the university the Chair of the Future. Crafted out of sustainable materials and featuring the university\u2019s letter, it will have a space during the TU\/e\u2019s board meetings, as a reminder for decision-makers of the importance of making future-oriented decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">University for society<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the TU\/e\u2019s rector magnificus Silvia Lenaerts gave her speech too. In one of the passages, she discussed the task of the university. \u201cWhat\u2019s the role of the university? Offer what society needs, look beyond the challenges of today, we are a driver of change.
