Right now, AI gives people the digital tools to transform their online appearance in any way they desire.  AI is also learning the game from us and quietly deciding which face it will showcase as itself when interacting with us, writes the Max Planck Institute in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpg.de\/20451157\/0612-bild-the-face-game-149835-x\">press release<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"io-block io-block__summary\"><ul><li>An online game explores how chatbots will choose to appear to humans.<\/li><li>Participants experiment with different pictures of themselves.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To better understand these mechanisms, researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, the Toulouse School of Economics, the University of Exeter, and the University of British Columbia, together with the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9, have created and launched&nbsp;The Face Game. In this online experiment, humans mix up with neural networks, and everyone (including the machines) posts their profile pictures and reacts to the profile pictures of others. The game aims at understanding how AI will learn to choose different types of faces for itself, depending on the impression it wants to make and the human it interacts with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeking volunteers to play along<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we increasingly come across AI replicants with self-generated faces, we need to understand what they learn from observing us play the face game and ensure that we retain control over how we interact with these digital entities,\u201d says Iyad Rahwan, Director at the Center for Humans and Machines at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. His research center explores ethical questions concerning AI and the concept of&nbsp;Machine Behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for AI to give itself a face that best achieves its goals when interacting with a specific human, it needs to observe a lot of humans playing this game among themselves. \u201cThat means that we face logistic challenges because we need a great many people to participate in the experiment, ideally from all over the world \u2014 we would not want our result to be narrowly focused on European faces, for example,\u201d says Jean-Francois Bonnefon, research director at the Toulouse School of Economics and one of the project partners.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link advgb-dyn-92c38470\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/ai-revives-lennons-voice-for-final-beatles-song\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"AI revives Lennon&#039;s voice for final Beatles song\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">AI revives Lennon&#8217;s voice for final Beatles song<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">Paul McCartney is set to release the last ever Beatles song later this year, featuring AI-cleaned John Lennon vocals. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is looking like a team player?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how the game works: Once participants have logged in, they can begin playing rounds of the game, wherein they must mark the profile pictures of other players as \u201cteam\u201d-looking or \u201csolo\u201d-looking. They get immediate feedback about the accuracy of their predictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, once they upload their profile pictures, participants get regularly updated statistics about how other players have reacted to them. They can experiment with different profile pictures to see which are rated more \u201cteam\u201d- or more \u201csolo\u201d- looking. Finally, participants will encounter \u201creplicants,\u201d nonhuman players whose faces have been generated by state-of-the-art AI models continuously monitoring how human participants play the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed by Universidad Autonoma de Madrid researchers, The Face Game operates on&nbsp;multimodal AI methods, including human behavior analysis with&nbsp;discrimination-aware machine learning&nbsp;and realistic&nbsp;synthetic face&nbsp;images.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Online, profile pictures of human faces are everywhere, and they play a crucial role in shaping the first impression we make on others.
