In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.automotiveweek2023.com\/\">Automotive Week<\/a>, this is no different. Is it clever to bet on two horses, or should society choose between them as soon as possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The panelists:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klaus Feldmann (CTO Automotive Sustainability &amp; e-Mobility, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/nl-nl\/over-ons\/wie-zijn-wij\/onze-merken\/capgemini-engineering\/\">Capgemini Engineering<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard Smokers (Principal Advisor Sustainable Transport and Logistics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tno.nl\/nl\/\">TNO<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Menno Kleingeld (CIO \/ Manager Director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdlgroep.com\/nl\">VDL Groep<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdlets.nl\/nl\">VDL ETS<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ralph Kwakernaak (Assistant Chief Engineer Global Engine Development, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daf.com\/nl-nl\/leveranciers\/over-paccar-purchasing-europe\">DAF Trucks\/PACCAR<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The debate begins with the practicalities of zero-emission mobility. Menno Kleingeld tells about VDL\u2019s first steps for electric buses (\u201cWhen they still had range limits of 120 kilometers, the charging infrastructure was a real burden\u201d), Klaus Feldmann about the time when he was responsible for 18,000 e-scooters at Deutsche Post (\u201cthey all start and stop at the same time; imagine the power demand at those moments\u201d). Their joint conclusion: we need intelligent charging. \u201cWe can do it through smart interaction with vehicle and user\u201d, Feldmann says. \u201cUse the energy when it\u2019s there and where it is. So if we have too much wind, find a way to use it. That\u2019s one of the big challenges of today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link advgb-dyn-e424cc77\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/building-a-cross-border-ecosystem-for-battery-production-for-the-automotive-industry\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Building a cross-border ecosystem for battery production for the automotive industry\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">Building a cross-border ecosystem for battery production for the automotive industry<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">TNO Holst Centre and the German Zentrum f\u00fcr Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung (ZSW) will collaborate on developing next-generation Li-ion batteries for the European automotive industry. The &hellip; <a href=\"\">Continued<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Richard Smokers answers that much will come down to the infrastructure. \u201cDo we need to prepare for e-fuels, methanol, and hydrogen? And how many different technologies will we need? Regional energy strategies forgot to take transport demands into account, we need to make up for that.\u201d For Ralph Kwakernaak, infrastructure is also crucial. \u201cDAF wants to find the best solution for every use case. Battery-electric, hydrogen-propelled, e-fuels, in the end, the customer decides, based on how they can earn money with it in the best possible way. So please build the infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use cases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kleingeld adds that it also depends on the use. \u201cLong-distance coaches with sometimes unpredictable routes require a different infrastructure than a city bus. It depends on the use case, on how our clients make money, and on the local systems, so it would be unwise to make a choice now. One aspect is unifying them all: huge expectations. \u201cBut we can already be &hellip; <a href=\"\">Continued<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>For Smokers, it\u2019s also inconceivable to bet on just one technology. \u201cBut if we really want to find out which technology will suit us best, we need to build two complete systems. We can\u2019t scale up if we don\u2019t make sure who is the winner. In the end, there may also be two winners that can be scaled up.\u201d Smokers understands the need for a temporary focus on e-fuels to bridge the gap between fossil fuels and hydrogen or battery-electric, \u201cbut don\u2019t use that to postpone real decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feldmann redirects the discussion toward the origin of the energy. \u201cThe choice between battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cells is also a choice around where the primary energy comes from. We have to be aware that hydrogen is far from always green. You need 2,5 times more energy to create hydrogen and up to five times more for e-fuels. At Capgemini, we offer these kinds of eye-openers for the companies we support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Store and transport<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kwakernaak replies that it is about more than the primary energy. \u201cEnsuring we can store and transport energy is just as important for our clients. Hydrogen can be a solution, but so can other chemical compositions to overcome grid capacity challenges. Sometimes there\u2019s an overload on the grid, and there\u2019s a seasonal effect as well. We shouldn\u2019t waste energy because we\u2019re unable to store it.\u201d Hydrogen is great as an energy carrier, he adds. \u201cThere\u2019s no way back, we will go to zero. But stop fighting each other about what to do ten years from now and forget what to do right now. Smokers is clear: \u201cIf we want one horse to win the race, we must bet on at least two horses for now. Yes, battery solutions are looking good now. But we\u2019re not there yet.\u201d Either way, it\u2019s about infrastructure. \u201cLet\u2019s not spread our efforts too widely, though. Build the infrastructure in a well-thought way, around logistic hubs and routes, such as the Rotterdam &#8211; Venlo corridor. Differentiate regionally, according to local demand.
