Lex Oosterveld, Principal Member of the Technical Staff at OnePlanet Research Center, presented it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roadmap sets out the future of sustainable food production and distribution using photonic microchip technology. It describes integrated photonics&#8217;s role in transforming sustainable farming practices and food distribution \u2013 maximizing yield and minimizing food waste throughout the supply chain. Multiple organizations have contributed to the roadmap\u2019s creation, including <a href=\"http:\/\/mantispectra.com\">MantiSpectra<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tue.nl\">Eindhoven University of Technology<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/tudelft.nl\">Delft University of Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/award-winning-photonic-sensor-chip-enables-a-materials-sensor-in-everyones-pocket\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Award-winning photonic sensor chip enables a materials sensor in everyone&#039;s pocket\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">Award-winning photonic sensor chip enables a materials sensor in everyone&#8217;s pocket<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">Spectral sensor technology company MantiSpectra has won the Hermes Award at the Hannover Messe in Germany for ChipSense &#8211; a spectral sensor on a chip. &hellip; <a href=\"\">Continued<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Precision agriculture is at the forefront of this transformation. It uses sensors to enable exact and optimized growing and distribution techniques. This can help us address global food challenges, including how we feed an estimated 10 billion people by 2050. However, it needs small, cost-effective, and scalable technology for high-volume and low-cost production. That\u2019s where Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One-third of the food we produce is wasted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These integrated photonic microchips are fabricated like semiconductors but use photons (light) instead of electrons. Miniaturization and low power consumption make them well-suited to handheld devices. They\u2019re ideal for optical sensing applications, particularly real-time remote sensing of crop and food composition, both in the field and throughout the supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that around one-third of the food we produce globally is lost or wasted \u2013 about 1.3 billion tons of \u2018edible\u2019 parts. Sensors also allow early detection of crop conditions and diseases, avoiding waste. A limited number of platforms have multiple applications, opening up exciting opportunities within the agrifood industry.
