{"id":44163,"date":"2016-01-15T07:00:09","date_gmt":"2016-01-15T06:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/e52.nl\/?p=44163"},"modified":"2016-01-15T07:00:09","modified_gmt":"2016-01-15T06:00:09","slug":"high-tech-peak-award-stella-lux-the-family-car-powered-by-solar-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/high-tech-peak-award-stella-lux-the-family-car-powered-by-solar-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"[High Tech Peak Award] Stella Lux: the family car powered by solar energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Recently the e52 High Tech <em>Piek<\/em> Awards were presented to nine people who made a significant contribution in the high tech arena (or from whom we expect great things in 2016).<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>The award titles bespeak a holiday theme, with one \u201cPiek\u201d award (a typically Dutch Christmas tree-topper with a pointed shape), four \u201cStar\u201d awards, and four \u201cKnallers\u201d (firecrackers, or as we like to call them: Blasts).<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>We\u2019ve been talking to each of the award winners, and featuring one every day.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Today<\/b>\u00a0Solar Team TU\/e\u00a0<b>What<\/b>\u00a0Star of 2015\u00a0<b>Why<\/b>\u00a0Stella Lux &#8211; the family car powered by solar energy &#8211; won the World Solar Challenge and received worldwide attention<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/high-tech-piek-awards-dit-zijn-de-winnaars\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>These are the 9 High Tech Peak winners of\u00a02015<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Stella Lux in (slightly more than) 52 words<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In 2013 students of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarteameindhoven.nl\" target=\"_blank\">TU\/e Solar Team<\/a> developed the first family car powered by solar energy, called the Stella. With Stella the team won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldsolarchallenge.org\" target=\"_blank\">World Solar Challenge<\/a>, which takes place every two years in Australia. Last year, TU\/e students built a successful sequel to this solar car, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarteameindhoven.nl\/stella-lux\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stella <b>Lux<\/b><\/a>: faster, more efficient and more comfortable. The new and improved car won the 2015 edition of the challenge in Australia and gained a lot of attention worldwide. Recently\u00a0the team traveled to China together with NXP to talk to interested parties over there.<\/p>\n<p><i>e52 interviewed Stella alumnus Wouter van Loon on what makes this innovative family car so successful.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>A family car<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we first developed Stella in 2013, the idea was to build a solar car which is both efficient and comfortable. A vehicle that fits your whole family. That was something completely new\u201d, says Stella alumnus Wouter van Loon. The success of a family car powered by solar energy has continued this year. A new team improved the car and brought it a step closer to the consumer market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.34.11-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39861\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.34.11-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.34.11 PM\" width=\"504\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Wouter van Loon and\u00a0Stella in 2013 (photo credits: Ton van Til)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are a few differences between Stella and Stella Lux. &#8220;The new car is even more energy positive,&#8221; says Van Loon. It generates more energy than that it needs itself. Where Stella was producing more energy than needed ten out of twelve months, Stella Lux is energy positive year round. Even in a country like the Netherlands. &#8220;The extra energy could be useful to power your home, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.44.17-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39863\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.44.17-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.44.17 PM\" width=\"734\" height=\"485\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Stella Lux<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u201d, as Van Loon consistently calls her, can drive a thousand kilometers in the Netherlands on a sunny day without charging &#8211; thanks to the 381 solar cells integrated on the roof of the vehicle. The car can accommodate up to four people and was designed to be extremely light by using materials like carbon fibre and aluminium (she weighs around 375 kilograms). The tunnel which runs through the center of the car plays an important role in the aerodynamics and makes it consume as little energy as possible. For the driver there are some interested gadgets used in the interior, such as the LAYR: a touch screen with haptic buttons. The great advantage is that you don\u2019t have to take your eyes of the road to operate it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.43.14-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39862\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.43.14-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.43.14 PM\" width=\"734\" height=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Mass production<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about speed\u201d, explains Van Loon when he talks about how to win the\u00a0World Solar Challenge. Stella Lux took part in the <i>Cruiser class<\/i>. \u201cHere the jury also looks at efficiency, comfort and the number of persons sitting in the car.&#8221; It was exactly with this combination of parameters\u00a0that Stella Lux excelled: she beat the competition\u00a0driving an average of 70 km\/h with two passengers and being\u00a0a smart and beautiful designed car.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.45.10-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39864\" src=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Screen-Shot-2015-12-14-at-12.45.10-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.45.10 PM\" width=\"738\" height=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After winning the World Solar Challenge in October Stella Lux has received a lot of international attention.
