According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/en\/\">Eurostat<\/a>, there were over 253 million passenger cars in the EU (in 2021), with less than two million being battery-electric powered \u2013 0.76 percent of this fleet. Expanding the scope to non-EU countries \u2013 including Norway, Great Britain, and Switzerland \u2013 the share slightly increases to 0.96 percent. Norway stands out with the highest percentage of the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\" data-src=\"visualisation\/12676240\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany is the country with the largest number of cars and has the absolute highest number of EVs. However, these represent a small fraction of the fleet. Italy is the second largest country in Europe in terms of the passenger car fleet and has the second highest number of cars per capita. In 2021, there were less than 120.000 electric cars in Italy. In France \u2013 where the number of total passenger cars is similar \u2013 there were three times more EVs. Great Britain and the Netherlands also had more electric vehicles than Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-layout-basic wp-block-visual-link-preview-link advgb-dyn-f00ce51f\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioplus.nl\/archive\/en\/teslas-price-reduction-will-electric-cars-now-be-cheaper\/\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Tesla&#039;s price reduction: Will electric cars now be &quot;cheaper&quot;?\"><\/a><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-side\"><div class=\"vlp-block-2 vlp-link-image\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vlp-layout-zone-main\"><div class=\"vlp-block-0 vlp-link-title\">Tesla&#8217;s price reduction: Will electric cars now be &#8220;cheaper&#8221;?<\/div><div class=\"vlp-block-1 vlp-link-summary\">On Friday of last week, the U.S. electric car manufacturer Tesla lowered the prices for its vehicles worldwide. Days earlier, corrections had already been made.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rising trends <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrol and diesel-powered cars combined are 90 percent of the whole European passenger car fleet. Although this figure includes hybrid models too, the great majority of vehicles are still powered by pure fossil combustion engines. The cleaner \u2013 but still fossil\u2013 liquefied petroleum gas is the third most used motor energy, powering less than three percent of European\u2019s passenger cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-hierarchy\" data-src=\"visualisation\/12699444\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite representing a tiny share of the European passenger car fleet, the number of circulating EVs is rising. Growth has been observed in recent years as technology has advanced (with longer driving ranges) and government subsidies have encouraged the purchase of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/12697217\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tesla on top of the rankings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, over 1.2 million cars were sold. Tesla and Volkswagen were the two brands selling the most cars, with the American carmaker having sold a couple of hundred more autos. Elon Musk car company\u2019s Model 3 was by far the most sold vehicle of the year. Volkswagen\u2019s ID.3 and ID.4 also claimed a spot in the top fifteen, as well as the e-UP!.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed\" data-src=\"story\/1824802\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>French automaker Renault sold a little bit less than 100.000 cars. Most of them were Zoe models \u2013 about 70.000. Hyundai and Peugeot are fourth and fifth respectively.
