Behind every successful project, many other aspects come into play, and they were the subject of discussion during the <a href=\"https:\/\/hightechcampus.com\/nl\/events\/high-tech-campus-eindhoven\/back-to-business-ai-edition-online\">Back to Business: AI edition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/hightechcampus.com\/ai\">AI Innovation Center<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hightechcampus.com\/\">High Tech Campus Eindhoven<\/a> organized the event, which took place on Thursday 18th of November in an online setting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three keynote speakers brought their expertise and addressed different AI-related topics. In addition to their presence, three AI-start-ups also pitched their ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Like giving away a newborn child<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI developers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asml.com\/en\">ASML<\/a> never see their models at work in practice. \u201cIt is like giving birth to a child, and then immediately giving it away to somebody else that will take care of it,&#8221;  explains Arnaud Hubaux, product cluster manager at the company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The manager explained how the challenge for data scientists and engineers is harder at his company. In fact, developers program without having access to data streams. Also, they don\u2019t receive much feedback \u201cunless the model doesn\u2019t work\u201d, Hubaux adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, developing AI at ASML also has a different kind of impact on applications. \u201cIf Facebook or Google AI make a small mistake and don\u2019t recommend the right product, no one notices that. If an AI in the semiconductor industry makes a mistake, it costs you millions\u201d, Hubaux stresses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why trust is really important. According to the manager, showing the products\u2019 weaknesses from the outset is a good way to establish good relationships with the customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/BackToBusiness_WF06_R11-1004x565.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-320049\"\/><figcaption>\u00a9 High Tech Campus Eindhoven<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI everywhere<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can serve multiple purposes, as devices nowadays contain sensors that gather an endless amount of information. Consequently, the possibilities at the edge of AI are limitless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;AI is now being driven to the edge, and many more things that seemed impossible before are now becoming a reality. All the calculations are now taking place in the devices, without sending data to a cloud, and that represents an opportunity for us,&#8221; says Clara Otero P\u00e9rez, &#8211; senior director of System Innovations at <a href=\"https:\/\/showroom.nxp.com\/focus-markets\">NXP<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Computer vision is just one of the areas mentioned, as it can help perform tasks that people get tired of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otero P\u00e9rez: \u201cVisual inspections of chips is a good example. A person looking at integrated circuits, checking for errors, gets tired after a while. A machine doesn\u2019t, and it can see hundreds of images and they can learn to recognize if a mistake has been made somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pushing AI at the edge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axelera.ai\/\">Axelera AI<\/a>\u2019s focus is on AI on the cutting edge. It has its headquarters in the High Tech Campus and it emerged last July as a spin-off from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitfury.com\/ai\">Bitfury AI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\">IMEC<\/a> in-memory computer teams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur technology is a game-changer when it comes to in-memory computing. It takes a memory cell and modifies it so it can compute inside the cell. This way, you can make millions of computations within one computational cycle\u201d, says Fabrizio Del Maffeo &#8211; CEO and co-founder of Axelera AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Del Maffeo presented its company\u2019s history, the idea behind it, and the vision for the future.&nbsp;Despite its recent foundation, Axelera welcomed aboard over thirty people and plans to hire more at the beginning of 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Axelera AI aims to produce the first samples next year and provide open access to the software in 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reimagining patient consultation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/autoscriber.com\/\">Autoscriber<\/a> &#8211; represented by CEO Jacqueline Kazmaier &#8211; was the first start-up to give its pitch. It uses AI to improve healthcare consultations between doctors and patients by recording the conversation. The data goes into the electronic health record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will also automate part of the administrative process for doctors, giving them more time to care for patients,\u201d Kazmaier adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team is currently running a pilot project at the Leiden University Medical Center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Applying AI for good<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Can AI solve some of humanity\u2019s greatest challenges? <a href=\"https:\/\/fruitpunch.ai\/\">FruitPunch AI<\/a> believes so and is educating engineers on how to apply AI in the real world, through AI for good and peer-to-peer learning challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe collect those challenges for NGOs and other organizations from all over the world. Then we define a problem where we can use data to solve it. Our community is already made up of 1500 engineers, and we&#8217;ve already organized 20 challenges\u201d, says Sako Arts, co-founder of FruitPunch AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the previous challenges, machine learning models were used to identify poachers or to help doctors diagnose COVID-19.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Read more about FruitPunch <a href=\"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/en\/?s=fruitpunch\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Benefitting from AI on the edge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scailable.net\/\">Scailable <\/a>helps companies deploy AI models in a range of different applications. It does so by optimizing the machine learning models for a device.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe developed the Scailable AI manager, in an effort to tackle the challenges related to AI on the edge\u201d, says Benedicte Lochtenberg, Scailable\u2019s CCO. \u201cThis way, you can pick a model from our library and get it work in your device. It is a plug-and-play solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology is being used in different applications, such as product quality checks, predictive maintenance, and smart logistics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Developing AI in the Brainport region<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Innovation Center for AI was launched last spring.
