The most famous example was in Ireland between 1845 and 1850 when about 90% of the potato crop was lost. Many Irish died of famine or left the country. Ever since, it has been a constant battle against the notorious pathogen <em>phytophthora infestans<\/em> (literally <em>plant destroyer<\/em>). This can kill not only potatoes but also, for example, eggplants, tomatoes, cocoa, pepper and palms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-562205a7-4e26-49af-b2f8-7d48111efba2\">Controlling phytophthora is difficult, in part because the pathogen and its target (the plant) are in a perpetual arms race with each other. In order to become less dependent on pesticides, a great deal is being invested in the development of resistant crops. This is done by breeding plants and more attention is also being paid to new forms of mixed cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-63a3ad2e-dd71-489b-b336-5be7718cb661\">It is helping, but despite this, the damage remains significant. The economic cost of Phytophthora for potato cultivation alone is estimated at 6 to 7 billion euros each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-e5dc497f-869d-475c-a764-1d4b52061b1d\">A sharp knife<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-76584fd1-980e-4173-8b0d-5d9fad9ea046\">But an invention created by Wageningen University &amp; Research (WUR) in The Netherlands offers hope. Experts from a variety of fields, ranging from cell biologists and physicists to plant disease experts, joined forces and first found out what Phytophthora&#8217;s main weapon is and then developed a green defensive wall. The research has been published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41564-021-00919-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature Microbiology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block-7aba9178-dbf1-4726-b1af-37b83ffcb3ba\" class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/tomato-608290_1920-509x678.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is tomato-608290_1920-509x678.jpg\"\/><figcaption>Phytophthora at work on a tomato plant. Photo Pixabay\/Pam Carter<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8cd9c3d1-027c-4fe7-9ba8-931f0f368519\">&#8220;We discovered that\u00a0<em>Phytophthora\u00a0<\/em>uses clever tricks to sharpen its tubular infection structure to then cut through the surface of the plant with a sharp knife. Using this strategy,\u00a0<em>Phytophthora\u00a0<\/em>is able to infect its host, without brute force and with minimal consumption of energy. This is the first time that this mechanism has been uncovered, and really a fundamental discovery,&#8221; Joris Sprakel, Professor of Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/news-wur\/Show\/Wageningen-scientists-discover-how-the-potato-blight-pathogen-penetrates-the-plant.htm\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-a47c4ef9-5720-4612-a8df-7edf5d33197e\">Adhesive strength<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-cd9c5076-8f1f-4030-9d66-a03d79c74b1a\">Professor of Phytopathology Francine Govers immediately spotted opportunities to combat phytophthora more effectively, efficiently and sustainably over time without involving the usual suspects of chemistry and plant breeding. Govers: &#8220;The laws of mechanics tell us that\u00a0<em>Phytophthora\u00a0<\/em>is unable to penetrate the plant without first attaching itself tightly to the leaf surface.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-663cd9a4-b86f-4d8d-b72a-500f23ef603c\">To test this idea, as a first proof of its feasibility, the researchers sprayed the leaves of potato plants with a non-toxic and inexpensive substance that minimizes the stickiness of the leaf. &#8220;This helped reduce the rate of infection by about 65%,&#8221; the WUR reports. &#8220;In an optimized trial on artificial surfaces, this effect even veered toward 100%.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-ff54d4d4-181f-4895-9b4b-eec7a343b57b\">It now seems to be only a matter of perfecting the process in order to hand Phytophthora and the potato disease a major setback. The WUR sees it as a victory for science and proof that a multidisciplinary approach to problems can lead to breakthroughs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Potato blight has caused famine and misery for centuries.
