But Desolination is in fact very well-intentioned. It is a so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/en\/home\">Horizon 2020<\/a> project funded by the European Union that uses research and innovation to create sustainable growth Desolination involves two innovations simultaneously: Solar power and desalination of seawater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-8c0c286e-47c3-498c-adbb-242f2ab2e6ac\">Riyad<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-52dfd991-41ec-4ef4-9415-37c6a6634a5c\">According to the Eindhoven University of Technology &#8211; one of the project participants &#8211; 12 countries and 19 companies and research institutes are involved. The whole project will take place in Riyadh, which is surrounded by desert, and is set to run for four years. The goal is to have a solar power plant built on the university campus of the Saudi capital by 2025. This will convert salt water into drinking water that is very scarce there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-296f7278-d9a4-46b8-8a19-8b181e34b581\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/13887099_1068220626548264_434232272537521685_n-678x452.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 13887099_1068220626548264_434232272537521685_n-678x452.jpg\"\/><figcaption>King Saud University in Saudi-Arabia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6f5f4e87-b573-40c4-a3fe-ca65b1908aa7\">Moreover, this will have to be done at a relatively low cost. The aim is that it should cost less than \u20ac90 per megawatt (MWh) of electricity and less than 90 euro cents per cubic meter (m3) of water. Incidentally, the CO2 emissions can also be significantly reduced, because the desalination of seawater in Arab countries is still being done through the use of polluting techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-646e6c1d-3def-44aa-8765-dc0d4fc30be0\">12 research institutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts from different fields will be brought together in this project, according to TU\/e.
