The Municipality of Rotterdam<\/a> began the Smart Energy System subsidy this year in 2020. The subsidy is aimed at supporting initiatives in the field of smart energy systems. Out of fifteen submissions, the municipality has selected five for the first round of subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The municipality can grant a subsidy of up to 50 percent of the costs for a feasibility study or 25 percent of the costs for a prototype. The subsidy amount, therefore, differs per chosen company. The maximum amount of funding available is 100,000 euros. This will help companies bring their systems to the market as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smart Energy System subsidy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability councilor, Arno Bonte: “As a city, we want to become the frontrunner when it comes to sustainability. We can accelerate the energy transition with smart and innovative solutions. That’s why we are investing in companies to support them in taking a step forward with their sustainable innovations.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Smart Energy System is geared towards meeting the increasing demand for renewable energy. The five companies are working on various developments, i.e. higher energy yields from wind turbines, ways to make better use of energy sources, installation of small wind turbines, and photovoltaic facilities for housing corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The municipality is giving these companies the room they need so that they can achieve their sustainability targets. The eventual success of these companies will also lead to economic growth and higher employment in Rotterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second and third subsidy rounds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A second and third round of grants from the program is expected. This is scheduled to be opened up for submissions in the first and third quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Municipality of Rotterdam finds it difficult to make investment decisions for these kinds of innovations. This is because there is often still not enough certainty as to whether a new innovation can be scaled up successfully. Which is why the Municipality of Rotterdam was prompted to launch the subsidy scheme. The selected companies have not yet been disclosed to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
