Dutch StartupDelta, the only European newcomer, enters\u00a0the Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking at #19 with more than 1,900-2,600 tech startups and\u00a0the 5th highest Growth Index of the top 20. The region\u00a0is geographically\u00a0defined by the Amsterdam-The Hague-Eindhoven triangle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Schermafbeelding<\/a>Amsterdam is, according to the report, an attractive location for tech startup founders due\u00a0to its unique lifestyle aesthetic and great startup infrastructure, “and while it\u2019s not as big of a startup ecosystem as more prominent European counterparts like London or Berlin, it certainly has the\u00a0ambitions to become like them.”<\/p>\n

It has been almost three years since the last Startup Ecosystem Report was released in November 2012, and since then the startup sector has grown at a booming pace.\u00a0The centerpiece of the 2015 Startup Ecosystem Ranking is the\u00a0updated component index, which ranks the top 20 startup ecosystems around the world. The index is produced by ranking ecosystems along five major components: Performance, Funding, Talent, Market Reach, and Startup Experience.<\/p>\n

\"StartupThe report mentions the Dutch ecosystem\u2019s success stories, including Startupbootcamp, a\u00a0global accelerator program now operating in more than ten\u00a0countries, Nimbuzz, and “the first Dutch tech unicorn, Ayden”.\u00a0Hyper-growth startups such as Uber established their European\u00a0headquarters in StartupDelta\u00a0and use it as the gateway to\u00a0continental Europe.<\/p>\n

The report: “To further enhance the ecosystem\u2019s global impact, the Dutch\u00a0government recently launched an initiative called StartupDelta,\u00a0which is trying to unite and better allocate the startup resources\u00a0of the Netherlands that are currently scattered across the\u00a0country.” Despite these promising developments, there is a long way to go. The Amsterdam-TheHague-Eindhoven Delta ranks last among top 20 in Funding. The lack of seed\u00a0and growth capital impedes entrepreneurial success, especially\u00a0with regards to later stage startups.<\/p>\n

The Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking Includes the Netherlands as European Newcomer<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What helps is that due to the small size of the Dutch market, Dutch\u00a0startups\u00a0tend to think global from day 1, which explains an impressive #10\u00a0ranking in Market Reach. On average 50% of their customers are\u00a0foreign and they offer their product in more than two languages\u00a0from the outset.\u00a0Finally, the historical tendency for entrepreneurs in the Netherlands\u00a0to relocate to other cities when their startup is ready to scale may\u00a0partly explain the noticeable gap of experienced serial founders\u00a0and mentors in Amsterdam (#16 in Startup Experience).<\/p>\n
