Het was groot nieuws, eind juni. Van de 20 kandidaten voor de derde ronde van Startupbootcamp High Tech XL<\/a> kwamen er maar liefst zes uit Griekenland. Vier daarvan haalden de eindstreep. En dat terwijl hun thuisland volledig in puin lag – althans financieel gezien. Was het een vlucht naar voren? Of is het gewoon toeval dat ze de komende maanden zo prominent aanwezig zijn\u00a0in de Eindhovense high tech-scene?<\/p>\n

\"Schermafbeelding<\/a>Geen van beiden, zegt de Griekse journalist Demetrios Pogkas<\/a>. Hij kwam mee met de grote Griekse delegatie en schreef er achteraf een beschouwing over. Zijn conclusie: er is momenteel gewoon opvallend veel high tech-talent in Griekenland. Pogkas:<\/p>\n

Being around these promising young researchers while my country appeared to be on the brink of collapse was kind of sad. It was sad to see that Greece has some world-class talent (indeed, in a sector such as high-tech or hardware), yet the way it currently functions it cannot really support it, let alone help it shine. I was feeling almost depressed being at a place like the High Tech Campus while looking at the pictures of people queuing up outside of banks to withdraw 60 euros.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

En dat is Guus Freriks – co-founder en managing director van het programma – met hem eens.<\/p>\n

“During our Fast Track event in Athens in late May, we saw amazing technologies that have been developed in science parks and research centers there. I’m excited with the level of technology, innovation and scientific accomplishments in Greece. There are technologies with important potential and people with motivation and passion, and that shine in their eyes to build successful companies.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Freriks houdt zich verre van politieke commentaren op de Griekse situatie. Maar wat er ook gebeurt, zo laat hij weten, hij wil in elk geval verder met de Grieken:<\/p>\n

“Europeans don’t really get the human catastrophe going on right now in Greece. Even if the country explodes, I will continue working with Greece because of the innovation it produces.” <\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
