Air traffic to and from the airports is routed around cities as far as possible. The flight operations of sport and private aviation are also subject to strict regulations. Even in urban airspace, conditions could soon be as cramped as on the roads below. Air taxis could take over a portion of\u00a0 passenger transport. The use of drones in commercial and private hands becomes more and more popular. In the future, drones will take over a broad spectrum of tasks. These could be courier or transport services, the inspection of bridges or large buildings, or traffic surveillance.<\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"en-GB\">DLR researchers carry out flight trials<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">This places new demands on the control of airspace and air traffic. For example, unmanned drones and small aircrafts must recognise and avoid each other. At the end of April, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum f\u00fcr Luft- und Raumfahrt; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlr.de\/dlr\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-10002\/\">DLR)<\/a> demonstrated how this can work during flight trials in the Port of Hamburg. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172296\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172296\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/VRT_300_on_MAKS_2017-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drones such as this Russian VRT-300 may carry out delivery\u00a0 services and courier flights in the near future. City-ATM explores technologies that enable them to operate safely above our cities. <br \/>Photo: Kirill Borisenko via Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The flight test on 24 April 2019 is part of the larger City ATM research project. &#8220;ATM&#8221; stands for &#8220;Air Traffic Management&#8221;, i.e. the monitoring and control of air traffic. <\/span> <span lang=\"en-GB\">In the vicinity of the K\u00f6hlbrand Bridge, a busy motorway bridge, scientists had drones take off one after the other or together. In total, they used three drones.\u00a0 The aim was to inspect the K\u00f6hlbrand bridge for cracks during ongoing traffic. The bridge crosses a tributary of Hamburg&#8217;s main river Elbe, thus connecting various parts of Hamburg&#8217;s port facilities.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172298\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172298\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.ioplus.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/city_atm_kameradrohnen-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These three drones were used during flight trials at Hamburg&#8217;s K\u00f6hlbrand Bridge. <br \/>Photo: DLR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Two drones ascended together. Then they flew their routes next to and under the K\u00f6hlbrand bridge. A special communication and navigation technology was installed in the drones. It enabled fail-safe communication between the drones and their operators on the ground. This allowed the operators to constantly track the course and positions of the aircraft. In addition, German Air Traffic Control <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfs.de\/dfs_homepage\/de\/\">(DFS)<\/a> , which is responsible for controlling air traffic over Germany, provided its surveillance data for the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"en-GB\">City-ATM is a long-term project<\/span><\/h3>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8220;We have demonstrated under very realistic conditions how, with the help of networked flight planning, registration and identification, as well as flight monitoring, conflict detection and conflict avoidance, automatically flying camera drones can operate together safely in urban airspace,&#8221; said DLR Project Manager Stefan Kern from the DLR-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlr.de\/fl\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-1149\/\">Institute<\/a> of Flight Guidance. &#8220;The\u00a0 example of an airborne bridge inspection was an ideal test scenario because the drones had to cooperate particularly close and dynamically.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\"><span lang=\"de-DE\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">In the &#8220;City-ATM&#8221; project, DLR and other partners from the science community and industry are working together.
