A pair of wood glasses? Is that even possible? – Of course, because ‘<\/span>no can do, does not <\/span>excist’<\/span> <\/span>according to the<\/span> resourceful designers from <\/span>Freising<\/span> in Upper Bavaria. In cooperation with the <\/span>Weihenstephan-Triesdorf<\/span> University of Applied Sciences an<\/span>d thanks to the know-how of <\/span>Frank <\/span>Instrumentenbau<\/span>, <\/span>Freisicht<\/span> Eyewear <\/span><\/a>start-up emerged and <\/span>developed the so-called <\/span>Woodflex<\/span> technology for modifying wood. They thus created the basis for the design of elegant wooden <\/span>glasses<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The process, for which a patent has been applied, makes it possible<\/span> to <\/span>individually design spectacles from a single piece of solid wood<\/span> for the first time<\/span>. Neither plywood nor material mixtures are used. The optician <\/span>after, heats the spectacle using <\/span>a valve – a hot-air device common in the optical workshop – and ergonomically <\/span>modifies<\/span> it to <\/span>fit <\/span>the customer’s face. <\/span>As the wood, when heated, becomes slightly<\/span> <\/span>\u2018doughy\u2019<\/span>, <\/span>it can be formed. It <\/span>solidifies after cooling down again. To ensure that the glazing remains <\/span>to be <\/span>risk-free, a locking block is inco<\/span>rporated into the frame. This can be<\/span> opened with a slotted screwdriver <\/span>to insert the glasses<\/span>. As soon as the screws are tightened again, the fine gap is barely visible.<\/span><\/p>\n

PROPERTIES LIKE ANY SPECTACLE FRAME<\/span><\/h3>\n

The wooden glasses from <\/span>Freisicht<\/span> ha<\/span>ve similar characteristics as <\/span>conventional glasses made <\/span>out of <\/span>acetate or metal. <\/span>However,<\/span> they <\/span>very much<\/span> impress with their exclusive character and sustainability. The frames are handcrafted on site in <\/span>Freising<\/span>. In addition, the eyewear pioneers exclusively use local wood <\/span>types<\/span> such as walnut and maple. The wood surface is treated in such a way that simple <\/span>staining<\/span> is easy to clean. The glasses are also protected from sweat and moisture. Individual grains and patina make each piece unique. The glasses are also <\/span>provided<\/span> with elegant <\/span>cases made of oak wood. The cases provide the <\/span>designer <\/span>pieces with full protection and excel in <\/span>the highest quality standards. <\/span>Exceptionally appealing<\/span>: The cases are manufactured in the <\/span>Steinh\u00f6ringer<\/span> workshops for people with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

DISTINCTION<\/span><\/h3>\n

Furthermore<\/span>, <\/span>at the end of January, <\/span>the <\/span>Freising<\/span> wood eyewear designers <\/span>have been <\/span>awarded first place in the Bavarian <\/span>PlanB<\/span> start-up competition<\/span><\/a>. Business ideas f<\/span>or the <\/span>biobased<\/span> economy were <\/span>particularly <\/span>honoured. <\/span>W<\/span>inning the competition, the start-up company <\/span>received 5.500 Euro<\/span> prize money and a starter unit at the <\/span>BioCubator<\/span> start-up centre in <\/span>Straubing<\/span>. “We will use the prize money for the further development of the company,” said <\/span>Wittmann<\/span>, <\/span>delighted<\/span> with the award, “this is a wonderful opportunity for us to convince even more people of <\/span>the possibilities<\/span> wood<\/span> has<\/span> as a material<\/span> <\/span>and to <\/span>accumulate<\/span> many more customers and fans.<\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
